Re: Need some dog training advice !

My dog Henry never returns to me when I let him off his lead either. He will only return when I have a treat any advice?

Re: Need some dog training advice !

Thanks for the advice (even if a couple post were very condescending)

Firstly ive never hit Bones and before me having him he was in a Cyprus kennel so i don't know if they did.

I still believe 'he knows' because if hes away for a short period of time he'll return waggy tailed and hopping around like Bambi however if like a couple of times he's gone over 10 mins he'll return head low tail between legs even with me sending him positive signals.

I think i will try the lead for a while but ultimatly he's a hound with 100s of years breeding telling him to hunt. He was so good from 1yr till 2yrs maybe he's just growing up i don't know.

I'm sorry you found them condescending; without knowing everything you have already tried it is difficult to pitch an answer at the level you want so people just tend to tell you everything they do in the hope that they give you a new idea I think.

Re: Need some dog training advice !

Try starting at home first for a week randomly call him from another room or other end of garden and give really tasty treat when he comes (ours loves hot dog sausages in tiny bits). When this is 100% go to quiet field with tracker lead on and do same for a week or so until every time he comes back (lead can be tugged GENTLY to bring him back) then try without tracker lead but still quiet place and progress from there making the treat less often. Hope it helps, but remember go slowly and dont move to next bit until he has got each stage 100%

Make sure you always have a treat to give him when he returns. If you don't have treats, keep him on the lead. IMO it really doesn't matter if he needs treats for the rest of his life. The important thing is he comes back when called. Lots of people are a bit hung up about using treats to reward a desired behaviour. I say, if it works, do it.
