Eating habit difficulties.

We're having some more trouble with Purdys eating habits...

If you've seen my post from a few months back, you'll know that she refuses dry food and will not eat it even when she's starved herself for three days, unless we add some sort of meat, and even then she leaves it, she despises puppy food (She looks at me as if she's considering disowning me if I even try to put some of the leftover cans we have in her bowl), and she'll only take meaty chunks. Pastes of any kind are off the menu and if it's not covered in gravy or jelly, I can shove it up my ***. Fair enough. I gave up trying to fix that when she starved herself for nearly a week and passed out.

So at the moment, we have her on Pedigree adult meaty chunks in gravy (And Iams biscuits if we can hide them well enough, but the bag will probably be heading to the dogs home food donation because she hates it), and she gets half a can three times a day, but the problem is she always seems hungry and wolf's it down so fast she ends up with hiccups. It's like she's inhaling it! Sometimes she even throws up after, because she's eaten so fast. We don't know why she eats this way. We feed Kaiser separately, because she'll go steal his and he's too soft to tell her to stay away, so it can't be that she's worried he'll steal her food.

I just want her to eat normally, really. I've heard of a lot of cases where dogs have gotten bloat from gulping in air when eating too fast and I want to prevent as many problems as possible. Ideally, I'd have her on NatureDiet and eating slowly and contently, but that seems to be reaching for the stars with her. Any ideas on what I can do to slow her down and stop the hiccups and throw-up (which she then tries to eat again, by the way).

Anti gulp dog bowl to slow down speed eaters.

My Pippi is very picky about what she will eat.

Have you considered feeding raw? I don't feed an all raw diet but I do give raw meaty bones as a supplement. Lots on here feed all raw diet and their dogs seem to thrive on it.

Thanks for the link, I'll look into that.
No, I've not tried feeding raw. My previous dogs have always been ok with store bought pet foods. I wouldn't know what to do with raw feeding

Re: Eating habit difficulties.

Another idea if your feeding wet is to stuff a kong with it, she'll have a great time getting all the food out, you could even freeze it to make it last longer.

your dog went for a week without food, sorry no way.try your local butcher.mine wont eat bisciuts without some fresh meat or fish(cooked) so we share whatever we have and he is happy and healthy.never let him past 1 day without eating, then its off to vets.

It was around about 4-5 days, but near enough a week. It's possible our housemate gave her scaps during that time but she didn't touch the food we put down and she got very thin.

Re: Eating habit difficulties.

Ok, so we've just discovered--after watching her eat properly--that not only does she gulp up her food, but she doesn't chew it! No wonder she's been being sick. She's only a little puppy and she's just plain swallowing the meat chunks whole, even the biscuits. I just don't understand this... frustrated doesn't even cover it.
