Maggots in sick...

.... sorry I know that's a pretty disgusting thread title but my dogs are pretty disgusting! If you're squeamish or eating your tea then don't read on!

Anyway, advice please...

Lily was sick in the car today, this is not unusual, Lily is sick 60% of the time she goes in the car But it's the contents of the sick today that I'm worried about.

We're were on our way back from a walk where they had been doing their usual charging around the fields eating anything they come across including cow pats. I try to stop them from doing this but it's easier said than done.

So her sick mainly consisted of chewed up plant life, cow poo and a bit of breakfast but in amongst it were quite a few what looked like maggots. I'm pretty sure they were maggots rather than worms and they were all dead (God I love dissecting sick!!!).

Should I be worried that she has an infestation of something or is it more likely that they were in a cowpat or something that she ate? She is happy and healthy in all other ways and is wormed monthly with Advocate.

Re: Maggots in sick...

Well maggots are different looking than worms so if your initial thought is maggots it may well be this. A little side note though, don't just relay on advocate for worming if your dog eats loads of cow pats etc as it is not a complete wormer unfortunately

Oh, I didn't realise that. I got the impression from the vet that it would prevent all forms of nasties. Should I use a complete wormer as well as the advocate then or ditch the advocate all together?

Re: Maggots in sick...

Sorry, no advice... but my god that's skanking ! So glad I'm not the one that had to clean that up!

On a side note though I wouldn't have thought maggots would be in cowpat as that is pretty much digested vegetable matter? I thought maggots were more of a rotting flesh thing ?

The things dogs have us doing..

But blimey please don't let your dog be scoffing out on walks.. Could pick something up that will give it more than a dodgy tummy..

Re: Maggots in sick...

Yeah vets love advocate because pah etc can't sell it like frontline. Advocate doesn't treat any tapeworms or ticks. Unfortunately there isn't really any way you can protect against everything in one go it's about using the stuff to protect your dog in your situation. Myself I know my dog doesn't eat snails and I don't leave bowls toys etc outside for them to slime on so I use fiproline (will be going over to advantix when I run out) and plerion (a chewable version of drontal) and that protects against everything except lungworm

Advocate was sold to me as a flea treatment, which does lungworm etc, and then you need to treat seperately for worms.
