Re: Maggots in sick...

This comes from the Bayer (manufacturer) site.

Advocate, a patented combination of Imidacloprid (from Advantage) and Moxidectin, is a break-through in the treatment of parasites in dogs. Advocate treats, protects against and prevents the major parasites of your pet, inside and out.

Treat- Eliminate existing parasite infections.
Protect - Continuous coverage, as one application lasts all month.
Prevent - New infections cannot establish.

Advocate is the most convenient way to protect your pet as it is the only spot-on product to control fleas, heartworm and gastrointestinal worms in dogs. That means no more nasty tablets for your dog.

Advocate provides:
The Fast Flea Control and Prevention. Imidacloprid spreads rapidly over your pet, killing 98-100% of adult fleas within 12 hours of application. In addition, Imidacloprid controls flea larvae in the pet’s environment and reduces the incidence of Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD).

Heartworm Prevention. After application, Moxidectin enters your pet’s bloodstream and with monthly use will prevent heartworm infection in dogs.

Treatment, Protection and Prevention of Gastrointestinal Worms. Advocate's unsurpassed efficacy against adult, immature and L4 larval stages of hookworms and roundworms assures protection against environmental contamination and prevents reinfestation of your pet.

Control of Ear Mites. For the treatment of ear mites, Advocate is highly effective as a single dose.

Treatment and Control of Demodex. Demodex is a skin mite that can cause a potentially debilitating skin condition in dogs. Monthly application of Advocate for 2 to 4 treatments is highly effective in the treatment of this condition.

Treatment and Prevention of Sarcoptic Mange. Advocate eliminates 100% of sarcoptic mange mites after a single dose.

I know, I do try to stop them and they know they're not allowed too so they take a running swoop at things as they go past and quickly scoff it down before I've had a chance to stop them.

Other than keeping them on leads all the time (definitely not an option!) I cant see what else I can do. They are getting better than they used to be so I'm kind of hoping they might grow out of this disgusting habit as they are still only 8 months old at the mo.

I have bought some wormer today to give them just in case and they're due their next dose of Advocate this week too anyway. I'm still a bit confused as to what sort of wormer I should be using on top of the Advocate to cover all types of parasites? As you can probably gather they need protecting against EVERYTHING - they eat cow poo, horse poo, sheep poo, rabbit poo, snails, dead things, plant life, soil, drink out of puddles etc....

....Oh dear, maybe I should just stop letting them out at all

Re: Maggots in sick...

Our vet sells us advocate plus drontal worming tablets, and this covers everything apparently.

There are some flea treatments that do worms too, like Stronghold, so if you only want to use one thing, you could get that.

Our pupster eats everything he possibly can too, and if he sees us coming for it he'll swallow it down quickly, so I know how you feel! It's a constant battle

Re: Maggots in sick...

Blech that's so gross!

Flies will lay eggs on anything that's decomposing or that they can help decompose. I would think maggots would be a good source of protein, but I'd be too busy vomiting myself if I had to clean up a sick with them in it!

I hope she's okay and that they both stop eating everything they encounter soon, crazy pups. It has to be hard on you.
