Just great!

Just been informed by the neighbours that when i leave the house vegas howls.... CONSTANTLY from the time i leave to the time i get back!
I know we havent had him long and he needs time to realize i will be coming home for him, but in the meantime i need some ideas on how to keep him settled why im out of the house.

I was going to leave the tv on for him and put some mince in his kong other than that i have no idea what i can do

Re: Just great!

Ah, you've only had him a short while so he needs time to settle. Do you know from Ceearott or his previous owner if he's been crate trained at all? Do you leave him in one room or let him have run of the house? How long is he being left for at a time at the moment?

Re: Just great!

awe hon it'll take him some time 2 truly settle, bet ya neighbor loved telling u that!

A kong is a good diea and TV or radio, a bone and toys etc also good idea, u may have 2 start by leaving 4 5 mins and sneaking back 2 check, each time come back in don't fuss him, ignore, no eye contact, each time u leave stay away a bit longer, he will gradually realise u will b coming back but it takes time xx

Re: Just great!

We leave the radio on for Koda when we go out - a neighbour suggested it when they came to tell us he was barking - not had a problem since!

Well he did have the run of the hallway and livingroom etc ..i didnt want to give him run of the kitchen also because poppy is still housetraining and i dont want poop everywhere
I havent been out alot at all since we had him saturday i popped out to get him more food twice about 1hr 2hrs tops because i had to search the shops for his food.. and today about an hour an half to buy a freezer lol

I was thinking about sleeping on a towel and leaving it in his bed also so he thinks in there.
Today he was just left in the kitchen with poppy.

I hate to think hes anxious when im out, poor boy!
Funnily enough when i have come home before i havent heard a thing! I could only hear him when i put the key in the door earlier and he was LOUD so i would have been able to hear him from the car surely esp is next door but one can hear him...the other side

Re: Just great!

aye sumat wiv ya scent on may also calm him, know this link is in relation 2 pups but principles of separation anxiety still the same, have a read through.

Not sure if he was crate trained by the girls, he would have bene as a pup though coz all Ceearotts pups r Dr Ian Dunbar advocates crates for this issue so might b worth trying, anyway link below hon x

Re: Just great!

Kongs are always good, maybe hide a few smelly treats round his "area" (and make a note of where you put them in case you forget and they get smellier) so he is occupied with sniffing them out. And a stagbar or some other long lasting chew, possibly a nice bone? And plenty of toys for him to chew if he wants.

If you have a big enough crate maybe have that covered and put a you scented towel in it so if he's feeling insecure he can sit in the crate to feel a bit safer, if not is there anywhere you can cover over to make into a small space for him(as a substitute)?

Poor Vegas, i'm sure once he's settled down a bit more he'll calm soon enough

Re: Just great!

Try getting ready to go out (do your usual routine of grabbing keys, bag etc) and leave. Then come back straight away and sit down. dont give him any fuss or anything, make it seem like its no big deal. Do this over and over, but make the time youre gone a little longer each time. soon he will get bored and realise youll come back. Hopefully this will work Good Luck
