I do crate mine but mainly because with having a mixed pack of entire dogs and entire bitches it is to prevent any accidents when the bitches are coming into season. Some of them do tend to be chewers and slightly manic when they are younger.

Mine are show bred the show breds are usually slightly calmer than the working /racing breds they also tend to be a slightly bigger heavier dogs. Mine vary in size from 18.5" to 20.5"

Here are some of my gang

they are at the back Tegan and Owen and at the front Jasper Freyja Angel and Bandit

Here are the twins Amber annd Simba

The 2 pups Romeo

and the 2 foster dogs Mini and Cooper

Rocky and Romeo are now 6 months I need to twist OH's arm into taking some more photos of them.
Wow Freyja....you have quite a pack. They are all absolutely stunning. I love the names Mini and Cooper...LOL...

I think it would probably be best to try and look at the show lines.

We will crate the pup for the first 6mths for toilet training and any potential chewing. But the crate will be in the same room as Bailey so neither feel alone when we are not around and help them to bond.

Seeing your pics has made me really excited.....
Thankyou!!

Thanks Mini is Angel's sister and went to live with Cooper but her owners have split up and the man found himself struggling to give them the time they needed so they came back to me. We have had to work through some issues but now they need to find a new home with no other pets. I hate their names and tend to call the Toby and Tess but their previous owner was into Mini's hence the names. I know Cooper was orginally Toby and he still answers to it and Mini answers to anything.

Is your show or working lines? Your baby sounds gorgeous. Would love to see some piccies.

When Bailey was pre 6mths he was loopy so im kind of expecting the same again but with the knowledge that being a whippet the pup will calm down to being lazy as so many people describe them. If it is calm from day one then bonus.

When Bailey plays it looks like he is being rough as he makes lots of very odd noises and sounds like chewbacca.....but when you watch closely he is actually being quite gentle and because of the noises, jumping around and teeth showing it looks worse than it is so I think the main thing we need to worry about when they get rowdy is the noise but would defo be watching like a hawk.

From whippets I have seen it will actually stand taller than Bailey when full grown as he is short and stocky so hopefully that will give a height advantage, as Bailey will weigh more which should even them out in the play fighting stakes.

Im so excited that this could be happening in the next few months .

xx
My whippet is from Show lines blue brindle that's a pic of him in my signature :-). I did put a thread up when i first bought him home that had a few pics. His name was Milo then! We changed it after a week lol

The play thing can be very wearing! They really are none stop and it is the noise that gets me...luckily for me i dont have to put up with it all day my OH does but as long as you have a time out area you should be ok and im hoping that he will grow out of it. Lola goes to my parents a couple of days a week and as soon as she had gone he pretty much fell asleep for the rest of the evening. We have just clipped his toe nails and he wasnt bothered at all! Its a total contrast! Love them both though! :-)

Bailey has just got to the point where he sleeps quite abit - he is either up and on a walk / playing with us or sleeping so a pointy dog sounds just what im looking for as the routine I now have with bailey is perfect for our lifestyle. I couldnt for instance manage a husky no matter how much I would love one I just dont have all them hours in my day to be out walking.

Have you found them to be destructive in anyway?

Bailey chewed a chair leg when he was teething but he much prefers to try and pinch a sock or pair of knickers if he can while im loading the washer and play 'catch me'

x
I've not found Walt destructive, he does love a chew and is quite nippy but he's quite slow! lol he will quietly chew on something but will stop as soon as you say ah ah.

Lola had also just got to the point where she slept quite a bit during the day, unless she was out! Like i said on previous post that is the biggest problem ( to be honest the only problem) they would play 24 - 7 if i let them!

Pic attached was just taken!

Re: Advice on whippets...as a second dog?

Aww walter is beautiful.

We had a similar problem when we first moved in with family afew months ago. Bailey wanted to play with ruby all the time, and there were times when they had to be seperated. But after a month or so they learned that 9pm was time to curl up and sleep or your in big touble...that's when we have our relax time and watch a film or something!! Lol! I'm sure you will get there to, especially when walter can start walking and get rid of his energies that way xx

Re: Advice on whippets...as a second dog?

I got my whippet boy puppy when my female JR was 2 1/2 yrs old. They get on great. He seemed scarily fragile as a pup but they used to do plenty of rough play and still do. He is 2 now and stands about 22 inches to the shoulder.

He is a wimp though. Cries so loud that it seems like he's really injured and then 2 minutes later he's racing around like a crazy thing. Never had any problems with tearing his skin. In fact no injuries. Hope I'm not tempting fate

He was the least destructive as a puppy - he chewed a radiator knob and managed to pull the carpet off the bottom stair. Lots of andrex incidents though

He is very obedient and good. Much better than stubborn JR, who sometimes leads him astray. And he is very loving and loyal. Definitely recommend.

Re: Advice on whippets...as a second dog?

Most whippets do not play all day unless they have another dog encouraging them to do it. I have 4 pups of 6 months old 2 dogs and 2 bitches and even they all 4 together have periods of high activity and periods when they rest. To be honest the 2 iggies are far worse than the whippets they just do not stop at all they start at 4.so in the morning and stop when I put them to bed at night.

Our first whippet the old white boy Jasper was the best pup ever he never chewed or did anything wrong apart from he did tend to howl when left alone but some of the younger ones are destructive Angel is about the worse I think. Saying this none are as bad as our irish setter Zoe who will chew absolutley anything she can get old off.

Re: Advice on whippets...as a second dog?

Eli never chewed anything and the other lurchers I've had haven't chewed either.
Now Loki is another story he has tried to eat the house think its whatever hes crossed with, I will not blame whippets or greyhounds for his terrible behaviour
But crating has stopped this and he seems much calmer for doing it

Re: Advice on whippets...as a second dog?

We have 3 whippets, 2 adults (dog and bitch) and a bitch pup (from our bitch) who is now 17 weeks old. All 3 can be hyper when they are out for their walks but tend to be calm when in the house. We've had now problem toilet training the pup or with er basic training (she does sit, stay and a reasonably good recall for her age). We've never had any trouble with skin tears and they do play rough with their doggie friends (2 greyhounds, a german shepherd and a staffie amongst them all) as well as playing rough with each other.
