getting really fed up now

as some of you know ive been phoning round my local rescue centres as i want to adopt a puppy.
rspca said no as got a 2 1/2 year old also been turned down because of my daughters age. well today took the biscuit. was told as the last time i had a dog i was living with my perents i am not experienced to look after a puppy/dog by myself.
i had my last dog from 8 weeks old i was 16years old and had full responsibility ie walking toilet training feeding. cleaning up after him even to the point where when he was hit by a car (i wasnt there at the time) i stayed up with him all night while he had his leg in plaster holding him in my arms so he could have a comfortuble sleep.
ime 39 piggin years old not 9. im so peeved off. the only place that will except me was the dogs trust. i travelled with my hubby and daughter on sat 31miles just to register with them. surly that in itself says alot.
what am i doing wrong???????????
sorry rant over lol

Re: getting really fed up now

We got turned down by loads of rescues because we have 2 small children, so we just looked elsewhere in the end. Very frustrating. Hope you find a lovely pup soon.

Re: getting really fed up now

Your not doing anything wrong. Sadly there are rescues who have strict guidelines and there are other rescues who will lie through their teeth so you'll take their dog.
We were almost rejected by a rescue because we are near a road, even though we have an 8ft wall in front of our house and a locked gate to get out

I can understand why you're annoyed with them but sadly they may not know enough about their dogs history to say that they are safe with children.
Is there a certain breed you're after?

Must be so frustrating Have you tried the greyhound rescues (if you like greyhounds) ? They often adopt to homes with children.

Re: getting really fed up now

I think that my breeds rescue would possible allow dogs to be rehomed with children though I've no idea how busy they get.

Re: getting really fed up now

I know your pain.

I have a dog already, a baby, another young child, I'm also a childminder AND I have a cat.

8 months of ringing EVERY rescue within a 40 mile radius and I ended up purchasing a puppy from a breeder.

I never tried greyhound rescue, I have a phobia of them.

When we walked into Dog's Trust with our 3-year old and we asked if they would consider us, they said "No" point blank. Lovely.

Re: getting really fed up now

I was reading a thread on dog pages as we at our rescue often get asked to rehome dogs and we have an over 7 rule - in our case its because all our dogs are ex strays and we have no history on them... I wanted to be able to offer some advice to the people with younger children.

Anyway, I saved the thread on my other lappy, but rescues who would definately home to families with younger children if the right dog came along (i.e. one in foster with kids or with a known background) are

HOpe Resuce
Hereford adn Worcester Animal Rescue
Friends of the Animals RCT
Liverpool Boxer Rescue
Dogs Trust
Labrador Rescue South East and Central

Will have alook tomorrow to see if can find anyone else... I think DASH (can't quite remember exactly where they are, over towards where yorkshire meets nottinghamshire??? could be totally wrong.

Concensus seems to be that its definately worth ringing roudn the rescues especially the smaller ones; and speaking them and letting them know you are a responsible family.

Can understand it with rescues, especially if the dogs have no history or you have to rely on the person signing over who may say anything .. combined with a family that you do not know (everyone says they know how to handle dogs around kids yet hear hear some right stories) so by letting them know you can manage my go along way.

Although some of the rescues ARE a long way away, many have dogs in foster homes all over the UK, and often some will have a chat first, doa homecheck and then its only one trip to meet the dog and you can potentially take it back with you if everyone is happy etc....
