Ace

To think this great guy would have been PTS last month always makes me want to shed a tear now.

Ace has been with us a full week now and altho I know it hasnt been long for him to show us his true personality, I have been happy with how he has been so far.

At home, my only niggle about Ace is that he guards food and toys. But this is always by a warning growl and we now just simply dont leave food/toys with the dogs unsupervised, which has sorted that in an instant!

In the garden, both Saior and Ace run about taking it in turns to hump and chase, both tails wagging and always get happy panting faces afterwards waiting for treats and a game of fetch.

With the children, Ace is calm and happy, he walks to my teenage Son for a fuss and sometimes sleeps at his feet. He tolerates my Daughter who always wants to play dog related games with him or go through his raining etc and he walks nicely with her holding his lead.

Outside the home, he loves his walks and he loves taking a tennis ball with him on walks to ghe field. He is very keen on cats he sees in gardens and we have quickly learnt that even the fake cats to scare other cats from soiling gardens, dont go un noticed by Ace lol ( I had to drag him away from a fake cat the other day, but I could barely walk from laughing!).
A simply solution has been to spot any cats before Ace does and keep repeating, "come on this way GOOD BOY ACE!" which makes him wag his tail and he follows us nicely and gets a treat/fuss once we pass the cat.

He doesnt react to dogs in general, but a few times, he has seen a dog close up and he has tried to lean toward the dog for a sniff... but again, if not appropriate to stop for a sniff... "come on, this way, GOOD BOY ACE!" .. tends to keep his focus on us and the walk.

When greeting other dogs (today was a mad pom and a mellow GSD) he just stood and let them sniff him and didnt bat an eyelid.

With Children he is more than happy to stand patiently as they fuss him, or even sit for them if they ask. Sometimes he wags his tail too and looks at ease around them. Even the 4 littlies (6 years and under) who were in the back garden yesterday, all got to say hello and fuss him , for a brief 2 minutes, not wanting to overwhelm him!

When it comes to training, Ace knows sit, paw and you can also put a treat on his nose. So were are still trying to figure out what he knows and doesnt... but he is a stubborn old boy and sometimes he just refuses to do even a sit! So I am sure he knows alot more, but his not giving us any clues!!!

And one thing that made me very proud of him today, was we took a little friend on a walk with us, who is a young dog phobic girl.
Thanx to Aces calm nature, she was stood on the field with him clutching the treat bag and altho she looked very wary and didnt want to stroke him, she was happy to stay there and didnt get too upset... intil a mad pom came running over yapping, and then she did started to panic, cry and hide
But once that dog passed, she was back to feeling safe with Ace and even decided to bravely hold his lead at arms length down the road back home and Ace was such a good boy, he walked slowly and wagged his tail all the way. Altho she had no desire to stroke Ace, she was atleast walking with him and by the end of the walk, she felt more confident and even wanted to join us on a walk with dizzy Sailor so Ace must have really had a calming effect on her! Because she was really scared of Sailor. On Sailors walk she stayed as far away as possible and hid alot behind her Mom, but the fact she even wanted to come with us shows how much a calming effect Ace had on her fear of dogs.

Re: Ace

Still can't get over Sailors lovely smiley face, he is so pleased to have Ace as a friend - bless both of them.

I knew Ace was a smasher right from the start, he just had that special look and i'm so chuffed to read how brilliant he is being - Sailor too. Lovely for that little girl to trust Ace and then Sailor, it must be such a great achievement for her to have held those leads.

Well done boys - therapy dogs next!
