Car Sick

Hi Guys,

I did ask this before, kinda mixed into another thread, but I'm gonna ask it again as a qustion in its own right !!!!

Can anyone give me some advice, to stop my pup from tossing her biscuits (Literally !!!) every time we go out in the car.

She is in a cage
In the Boot (Hatchback Mondeo)
On the advice of some kind person on PF I have put blinds on the rear windscreen.
She cannot really see outside
Air Conditioned

We only have to be in the car for 5 minutes, and she'll hurl.

Tried her on the backseat too, she threw up in two minutes that time !!!

We split her feed into morning, and evening (when everyone else in the household has eaten). Someone suggested that if we intend to take her out in the car, to maybe only feed her once, in the evening ?

We really want to be able to take her out and about around the country on walks and camping trips etc, so any help would be so appreciated.

Re: Car Sick

I never feed before putting into the car, if we are going to a show then we will give them something when we get there, if we going on walks up the woods ect' we will wait until we are home before giving breakfast. (: - its defo better to not feed before travelling, just unsettles their tum.

I know you can get ginger tablets, I think from the vets, have you tried anything like that?

Thanks for the advice, so with a four month old pup, would she be okay, on just a daily feed in the evening ? JWB say she should have 470g of kibble a day. We have always split this in two.

I still feed three meals to a pup thats under 6 months and then swap to two meals at 6 months give or take. I wouldnt feed just one meal per day, thats just me but I also wouldnt feed directly before travelling so if you can feed a few hours before, so her tums settled or wait until your back - I would personally do that.

Re: Car Sick

I'd keep her on three feeds for now.

Mine were horribly carsick but because the woods are ten mins drive, they had to go in the car lots, at least twice a day as they came to the yard daily, too. Because they were frequently in the car, they soon grew out of it and were loose in the boot of the jeep, much better than when in a cage.

Maybe drive her round ten minutes a day and perhaps try a car harness that faces forward. I think habituation is key and she should stop throwing up if you drive her round little and often.

You can get car sickness prevention pills at the vet, but most dogs stop if in the car enough.

Re: Car Sick

Dillon was car sick as a puppy, after a few months he seemed to just grow out of it. I never let him drink to much if we are going out in the car.

Mmmmmmmmmm, yesterday, we went out into the dales, to give her a walk (not too far being a little pup), we fed her at about 8.00 - 8.30am, but we didn't set off in the car until gone 12.45pm. This is where I'm getting in a twist a bit, as there was a gap of 4-5 hours before travel.

To possible go above and beyond the realms of description here, her vomit, did still have alot of undigested food in it.

We use the JWB Turkey & Rice Large Kibble Puppy

Large Kibble Puppy

Edit, She has also been car sick on the Pedigree pup mix, and the standard size JWB puppy kibble too.

Re: Car Sick

Lily gets car sick and we have tried loads of different things. She is getting better and can definitely go for longer journeys now before she is sick.

I found that ginger does help too. I just gave her a gingernut biscuit about 20 mins before going in the car and it really did seem to help. HOWEVER.... she now associates ginger biscuits with going in the car so wont eat them!!

I'm hoping she will eventually grow out of it all together but she is 8 months old now and is still sick if we're in the car for more than about 20 minutes
