Re: Thank goodness things have changed
Choke chains are vile, as is hitting your dog, regardless of if it's with a tool or not. However, I still occasionally used to "rub nose in poop" technique. Purdy was fairly quick to house train. It only took a week to get her to know that she should go to the loo outside, and by 2 weeks she had it down to a T. Lots of praise when she pooped outside, and ignoring her when she did it inside. We rubbed her nose in it once or twice, and she soon learned that she shouldn't poop in the washing basket. It tends to annoying mummy ^_^
We've not really had much trouble with Purdy in the way of chewing/etc, so there's been no need for much decipline. She knows that no means no, and if I say "bed", no matter where we are in the house, she'll go to her bed and stay there until I say "okay". She's been sorted out by the cat twice, though. She made the mistake of thinking that Jake was a play toy and she could just run up to him and play. Oh, no. Jake, as lovely as he is, is a very no nonsense cat. Claws to Purdy's rump, she learned that Jake doesn't like to be charged at that day. After that, she'd creep up to him, stay low to the ground and wait about a foot or so away from him, to see if he came to her. He'd rub up against her and then wander off, and she was ok with that. The second time he told her off was when we'd been on holiday for the weekend and she hadn't seen him. She ran up to him all excited and he clawed her nose. She spent the next few days sucking up to him, creeping into his bed and licking him. |

Re: Thank goodness things have changed
Looking back to those dark days, I can understand why people didn't have the same relationships with their dogs that they do now.
I never had the kind of bond with any dogs that I have with Jet, and it's all because of the difference in attitude I have now. In the past dogs were considered as property to be moulded into how their owners wanted by any possible means. We didn't know better, that's what was the accepted method of training back then. It's been over 20 years since I had my last dog, and how things have changed. Dogs are considered part of the family, we even talk about adopting dogs. the whole attitude towards training has changed too, it's all about positive reinforcement not punishment. I'm glad I read up about all this before I got Jet, otherwise things could have been very different. He's not my dog, he's my companion and best friend. |

Re: Thank goodness things have changed
i`m glad to but i do wish they would encourage people against certain 'trainers' who still teach and promote these methods. some people will believe anything they say as they`re supposed to know best and won`t listen when you tell them it`s not the best way

Re: Thank goodness things have changed
I remember choke chains, rubbing doggy faces in poop and the rolled up newspaper too.
Also it seemed anyone who had a relationship like I do now with my dogs invariably had never bothered to train them so they were horrible.its like you either trained your dog harshly and kept them at a distance or you spoiled them rotten and let them run riot!! Very weird days IMO... ![]()

Re: Thank goodness things have changed
I prefered to use a halti on my GSD's. Choke chains don't really teach them not to pull. With the halti, I used the stop and wait technique. If they pulled, they pulled on the halti and it hurt their snout, so I'd stop and wait until they either returned to my side or sat down. Then I'd start walking again. It took some patience, but they soon learned that their reward for not pulling was to walk to the park, so they stopped. All of my dogs (and my parents' dogs when I lived with them) were and are loose lead walkers. Purdy's such a loose lead walker that I have to wrap her lead around my hand or it drags on the floor.
