Dormant worms can get woken in the bitch during pregnancy, worms can then pass across the placenta to the unborn pups. Worm larvae can also be transferred in the mothers milk when the pups feed.
Roundworms are also passed in the faeces of infected dogs and cats. The eggs have a thick shell and can survive for years in the environment. The dogs or cats then then lick or sniff up the eggs, which hatch, larvae then travels through the body, they develope into adult worms, lay more eggs that are passed in the faeces and then it can all start again.
Tape worms though are different. They cant be passed directly from one cat or dog to another via the faeces. They have to develope in another animal first. The most common animals to catch tapeworm from is fleas, mice and rabbits. Tapeworms in the pets stomach release segments containing eggs and they pass out in the faeces. The intermediate host, flea, mouse rabbit then eat the eggs, the eggs develope in that animal then the dog or cat either comes into contact with fleas and ingests one, or catches a mouse or rabbit and eats one.
Lung worm, is caught from slugs and snails and I think maybe frogs too.
