previous owners details

My friend has bought a dog, and when we took her for a walk she slipped her lead and ran. We rang the vets, dog wardens and all things like that, and the dog warden said they picked up a dog matching the description.
BUT..... my friend wasn't told she had been chipped and hadnt got round to getting her chipped. All the details are in the previous owners name. She's tried to contact them but its saying the number has been disconnected and she drove to the house to find they've also moved and she doesnt know what to do.
The dog warden said they cannot release the dog to my friend unless they hear from the previous owners to verify that the dog is not stolen/missing.
She can't prove that the dog is hers. Does anyone know what will happen or where to go from here?

Re: previous owners details

I don't suppose she got a receipt when she bought the dog?? Or was she in touch with the previous owners by email? What about printing all the emails off and showing DW? Or any voicemails on mobile from the previous owners?? Anything with some arrangements about collecting dog or something like that????

What a horrible thing to happen. I really don't know what to suggest, just hope your friend gets her dog back soon. Keeping my fingers crossed .

Re: previous owners details

Has your friend taken the dog at any point to her vets? If so could the vet not say the dog is registered with them under your friends name?

Otherwise it may be a case of waiting the 7 days and if the dogs not claimed 'adopting' it from the pound.

Re: previous owners details

She has no emails or anyhting like that as she was advertised on a board. And she rang and collected her a few days later, and no she didnt get a reciept.
She has registered the dog with a vet, but hasnt had her there yet. Her boosters are due next month and she registered her early.

The DW said there going to try contact the previous owners and take it from there.

Re: previous owners details

To be honest, I'm glad that the dog wardens are sticking to their guns & not just releasing the dog to your friend. Dogs get stolen, day in day out & anyone could go forward with this story.

Please don't be offended, your friend should have been told the dog was already chipped, but I personally would never buy anything without a receipt confirming that I was now the owner.

Hope it all gets sorted out sooner rather than later.

Re: previous owners details

I've never asked for a reciept for a dog, for the simple reason, i could have easily made it myself. A piece of paper saying she owns the dog is going to do nothing because the numbers they were using dont work and theres no one at the address and the neighbours don't know where they moved to.

Also she has pet insurance for her, would that make a difference?
I was looking through all the vets stuff she got with her and i came accross her pedigree papers! Would they be proof enough?

Re: previous owners details

I've no idea, the whole situation seems to have a lot of ifs, buts & do you mind if I don'ts

If I were your friend, I'd contact the previous owner myself & explain what was going on. Get her to contact the rescue centre to get the dog out & ask her to pay half of those costs.

I'd register the chip in my own name then buy a collar/harness/whatever which I'd have fitted properly to avoid anything like this happening again.

Hope this gets sorted out, sooner rather than later for the sake of this poor dog getting home to its rightful owner.

Re: previous owners details

I expect this happens a lot with chip details not being updated, if new dog owner can't contact the old owner then its unlikely the dog warden will be able to either so probably best to ask them what needs to be done to get the dog back home.
