this will upset people

are small dog owners, proper dog people?this isnt aimed at alll small dog owners, but everyday i encounter badly behaved small dogs, ans their owners talking to them like they are small children,it drives me mad!.Two days in a row ive had to quickly pull albert away from a small dog trying to nip him!IM SO FED UP WITH IT!ive brought albert up to socialise and behave round other dogs, but now i find myself wary of other small dogs, which no doubt will transmit it to him.frustrated rottie owner!!!!

Re: this will upset people

I know what you mean and as I have both I also know how annoying it is when the little blighters play up to my big guys so I make sure none of mine behave like that. It really is annoying and some owners of the little ones have no idea how difficult it can be holding on to a large wound up dog - they'd soon be wailing though if it got off and attacked the mouthy lil git!

Not fair on anyone, dog or owner to allow this kind of wind up IMO!

Re: this will upset people

I took the girls out for a short walk round the field yesterday lunch time, it was quite hot, so didn't want to be long. Had them both on lead, and spotted someone coming off the field, looked like they had dogs with them, so I went on the grass verge and put my two in a sit, to leave space for them to go round me. They spotted me, and immediately started having a conversation with their dog(s) to be good and not bark, no barking now, don't start barking, etc, etc. I had no idea what sort of dog they had, except it wasn't as big as the dry stone wall and plants I was looking over, as they came round the corner, I sort of smiled, it was three very small toy breed dogs, all straining at the end of their leads, and as soon as they saw my two, started to whimper, whine, and then bark, with the owner still carrying on with the conversation pretty much to themselves about how to be good and no barking........

*Some* owners of small dogs don't think they need to socialise or teach manners because of the size of their dogs. But then the same can be said for some owners of larger dogs, it does go both ways, but I have met more badly behaved small dogs than big ones, although personally, I would rather it were that way round

Re: this will upset people

I try not to get drawn into controversial threads anymore but I'm really starting to get fed up about this.

This is not aimed directly at this poster but there are continuously threads on this forum that criticise small dog owners and their dogs.

I agree some small dogs aren't well trained or are babied. Just like some staffy owners encourage their dogs to be aggressive or don't train them.

Lets not forget that 'small breed' encompasses a huge range of breeds - if we compared the number of badly trained 'small breeds' to the number of badly trained 'large breeds' I'm not sure there would be all that much difference.

There will ALWAYS be dog owners who don't do right by their dogs, no matter what breed they own. I HATE the fact that small breeds are classed as snappy pampered dogs, just like staffy owners hate their dogs being classed as vicious and aggressive.

Can we please STOP judging people by the size of their dog!

Re: this will upset people

I have also noticed both extremes.

But what I also notice is that people who really don't understand their pets, but buy them for children, usually take smaller dogs. Now, I have to say I know they love their pets, they care for them and make them a part of the family, but the truth is they don't know how to teach dogs how to behave.

Re: this will upset people

I could say the same for large breed owners!! (but I wont, because I do not stereotype people like that) I see just as many large dogs who's owners haven't got a clue than I see small dogs who need trained. It goes both ways.
It has nothing to do with the size of the dog, its all to do with the ignorance of the owner, no matter what breed of dog they choose.

Totally agree Mckenzie

I was especially upset the other day when someone who owns a small dog was saying how naughty it was and 'they would never get another lapdog again'
Well you had it from a pup, how it behaves is your infuence.

I especially agree with this comment McKenzie

in answer to this question the same could be said about any size/breed of dog. To own a dog you should do your best for it.

I dont think it right to think that way, thats like saying are all staffy owners idiots? we all know how many are in rescues, or all rottie owners just want a tough looking dog. It just isnt true.

People in general dont always do what is right, the dog they choose has no relivance.

In a perfect world ALL dog owners would be responsable. As we all know, that isnt the case.

Totally agree with Mckenzie

It seems every other day i come on here and someone is knocking small breed dogs

IMO it works both ways ive had many a large breed be snappy at lola so i dont think it is fair to sterotype all small breeds
