Ice Cream

So yesterday was a lovely hot day, and when I rolled in from work, the wife and boy were outside in the graden sat on the patio. My little monster had just eaten his tea, and then the good lady had popped out to a passing ice cream van and got him a Mr Whippy style ice cream for dessert. Now Tom loves ice cream, but its very messy so usually we give him a bowl to minimise collateral damage.

So I started to cook our evening meal, whilst keeping an eye on stinker through the kitchen window, however after only a couple of minutes I noticed the ice cream had gone, and the pup and my little buddy both had very guilty looks on their faces. When asked he did admit to feeding the rest of his ice cream to the puppy.

I just wondered if there would be any ill effects on her (apart from sugar rush, and getting overweight). It was just a normal soft whip ice cream, with no chocolate, nuts etc at all, most of the ice cream was already consumed by the boy, plus of course she ate the wafer cornet too. She seems okay, has been to the loo twice, and not had the runs or anything and seems pretty damn good in herself.

I did think it kind of cute, although we did have to disipline our boy a little, as we don't want feeding treats like this to become habit. Nice to see she is slowly becoming his partner in crime though. He has ASD and rarely interacts with other children (will play next to them, not with them). But is beginning to play fetch with her now. She absolutely dotes on him

Re: Ice Cream

Dogs are generally lactose intolerant meaning any dairy products should be avoided as it can cause tummy upsets, the skits or vomiting, however if it were non-dairy ice cream that would be better. I'm sure one cone won't have an adverse affect though just so long as it is not a regular thing.

Re: Ice Cream

My sister in law buys her two dogs their own ice cream (one to share) when she gets one from an ice cream van. They love it and have never had any problems with it. Obviously she doesn't give them often enough to get them overweight though

Re: Ice Cream

As a very occasional treat it won't do him any harm.
Just like us really.

Re: Ice Cream

I once left a tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream out to soften on the side, forgot about it, and came back in the kitchen to find Harry had eaten the lot (most of the tub as well). He looked very pleased with himself too Didn't do him any harm, just gave him sweet smelling breath for a while

Re: Ice Cream

My 2 howl when they hear the ice cream van and are most put out if they don't get one. It's a treat and they have never had any side effects.
