I threw Purdy!

It's not how it sounds... Ok, just now when giving Purdy some cuddles, my OH called me downstairs, so I picked her up and got ready to head downstairs, not wanting to give up the cuddles. Coming out of the bedroom, I got my foot caught in one of her toys (we've just gotten her a sort of tunnel, a small one for cats for the time being, because she likes to lay in them) and I stumbled and fell forward. My first thought was "Oh my God, I'm going to land on her!", so in a panic, I half threw, half tried to push her out of my hands, and she landed on the floor with quite a bang, as did I. She landed on her feet, but I think she also tumbled a bit on landing and fell onto her belly. Of course, I feel God awful about it now

Whilst she seems perfectly ok, other than being scared to death of everything at the moment, I'm worried that she might be hurt. I checked her legs and paws, and all over her belly and chest. She didn't flinch or yelp, so I'm hoping she got through our little ordeal unscaved, but she seems a tad tired and withdrawn. My OH and I took her into the garden for a little play, and she perked right up and was running around like mad. It's just when we get upstairs, she'll head to her bed and just lay there. Do I need to worry about internal bleeding of any sort? I doubt she hit the floor hard enough for that, as I wasn't too hurt in the fall, I'll have a bruised chin tomorrow, maybe, but she is a lot smaller and more fragile than me... I just feel so horrid, but I didn't want to fall on her and squish her. Could I have prevented this, did I overreact?

Re: I threw Purdy!

I think your instincts just kicked in and you tried your best to save her from being squashed.

Just keep an eye on her and see how she is in the morning.

She's probably just a bit shocked.

My collie used to like to try and herd me whilst going down the stairs, how I or he did not break our necks I dont know.

Re: I threw Purdy!

awww please don`t beat yourself up, keep an eye on her in case something shows up but pups are a lot hardier than we give them credit for so i`m sure all will be fine. you did the best thing anyway as she could have got hurt had you not pushed her away. my dog a few years ago got thrown down an entire flight of stairs as a puppy - total accident of course but i remember seeing her fly past then hearing the yelp and rushing her to the vets yet by the time we got her there she was fine. still haunts me though but can`t help accidents!

Re: I threw Purdy!

Oh dear poor Purdy. I trapped Florence's tail in the car door once and rushed her straight to the vets. Needless to say she was fine just a little wary of the car for a while but she wasn't cross with me.

Re: I threw Purdy!

Im sure she will be fine. They do tend to be abit nervous around the same area (or feet!) if they have a tumble, they soon forget though.
Ive lost count of the paws Ive stood on also I managed to kick Heidi all the way down the stairs once and get poor Adam crushed under a very heavy puppy pen!!
They've all bounced back despite only weighing about 3 or 4Ibs at the time!!

Re: I threw Purdy!

Thanks, all of you... I think I reacted a bit silly. I'm keeping an eye on her at the moment. She's sleeping and seems to be fine, although I keep looking at her and saying "Does she seem to be breathing funny to you?" to my OH. He thinks I'm insane, needless to say. I think, if anything, it was more traumatising for me than her. I screamed bloody murder as soon as I heard her hit the ground. I just see her as my baby, in a way. She's part of the family, and I feel guilty that I let her get hurt, but I'm calming down now. I do think it was my instincts kicking in. I think a small tumble is a lot better than getting squished by 120 pound mummy in her eyes
