I can't see any problem with changing a dog's name. I would do it by using the new name followed immediately by the old name for a while, then gradually phasing out the old name. You may find, however that as your dog settles in, you decide that the name suits him and will keep it. Good luck whatever you decide.
This is what did with first dog who was Roxy and is now pudding, and Tekno never had a name he was just a number

Especially when dogs come into rescue where the name is not known the rescue will give a name, and the dog may not know it anyway, often rescues may have theme name weeks, or letter names etc... and we try to think of different names as looking back through time I remember the names, cosy was one of my favourites.... you can have so many of the more popular names coming through.

Both mine too respond to their nicknames - pudding can be a little chopsey madam so her nickname is Chopsey or chopper and she responds to it and tekno responds to Mr P, one of his other nicknames.

Re: Can you change a dog's name?

I didn't know Shannow's previous name and she has only been Shannow for 10 days and after 5 she knew her name is Shannow.

Pippi was originally called Gert and she adapted to her new name in about a week.

Bizkit was called misfit and even though it sounds very similar it still took him about a week to recognise his new name.

Re: Can you change a dog's name?

All my dogs are rescued, and I have always changed their names once they are here with me. I look at it this way, their original name was in the past, and their new name is today and the future.....

From memory I don't think it takes long for them to understand and respond to their new names, especially when you call them for food, treats, training etc. Our Floyd knew his name within 12 hours and responds to it really well, we've had him 7 weeks now and he never fails to respond.

Re: Can you change a dog's name?

Again, thanks for all the replies! His current name is Shadow - no offence whatsoever to anyone who has named their pet Shadow, but the name is not for us.

Exciting times ahead - two dogs and two cats - will be a handful!

Re: Can you change a dog's name?

Yup, changed both of my dogs' names. Max was Mix-up and Milly was Mandy (sheer coincidence that they both have names with the same initial as their old ones. Not so much a coincidence that they both share the same inital now). Milly had only been in the kennels a week and didn't respond to Mandy and there was no way we were going to be calling Mix-up on the field

Both dogs learned their names relatively quickly.
