Puppy help

My 8 week old puppy has been here 2 nights now and has been pretty good. At night time I have been putting her in a cage but leaving the door open and putting newspaper and a puppy pad down incase she needs the toilet through the night. Both nights I have got up at 2.30/3am to check on her and get her to do the toilet, then its back to sleep until 6.30ish - both mornings she has done both a pee and a poo on her newspaper/mat when I've come down. Should I carry on doing this or keep her closed in the crate?

She has been quite good going to the toilet during the day but has had a couple of accidents - one of which was on the carpet. I have cleaned it with Vanish and an odour preventing spray but she keeps sniffing the area as if she's going to pee there again. I have cleaned it again this morning with 1001 spray so hoping that does the trick - does anyone have any other solutions I could use?

Should I also start taking her outside for the toilet? She has had her first lot of injections last night so isn't fully vaccinated yet but there are no other dogs nearby and our garden is enclosed. At the moment her newspaper and puppy pads are by the back door - is it maybe an idea to wait until she is going to the newspaper all the time with no accidents before I start introducing something new?

thanks for any advice

Re: Puppy help

we brought our pup home at 8 weeks and he'd had his 1st lot of jabs and we let him out into our garden to do his business & to play all the time. when he did his "busy's"- we gave lots of praise and a treat etc so he associated it as a great thing!

for the 1st week we used puppy pads at night but soon took them up.

i was getting up twice a night (1.30 & 4.30) to take him out after a while we moved the times along by 10/15 mins and now at 15 weeks he'll go through till 5.30/ 6am till he tells us he needs a wee.

a lot of the advise on here is to use a biological washing powder to clean up accidents (it's something to do with the enzymes that kill off any smells that we can't smell but dogs can) so it stops them going back to that place!

good luck with your new pup - any pictures?

Re: Puppy help

I can't really give any advice as we don't have our puppy yet but I agree with anita a above

Did you not know it's illegal to post a puppy thread on here without any pics?

Re: Puppy help

Vanish, 1001 etc wont stop a dogs nose sniffing out what was there. Try something called simple solutions it uses bacteria and enzymes to eat and remove any urine, vomit, blood etc. I always use it sister spilt coffee on carpet last week used that to get it out

Re: Puppy help

what a cute puppy
I have used the simple solutions spray, which seems to work, but it is a little pricey i thought at around £8. i have also read that washing powder works, and i cant remember where i read it, but white vinegar too?? although on a carpet that may be a little smelly i have also read that you should avoid any cleaners that are ammonia based, as this makes it even more appealing to them.
i havent used potty pads or newspaper at all, because i think if you want your pup to go exclusively outside, telling it its ok to go inside anywhere would just send mixed messages? but i am a first time puppy owner, so am just going on what i have read in the thousands of articles before bringing my little one home
I also let Kiva outside from her coming home, i think as long as your garden is enclosed and you know no random, unvaccinated dogs have access, then it is ok?
puppies are definitely more demanding than babies arent they, at least babies can wear a nappy! ha ha good luck with it

Re: Puppy help

Awe she is a little darling, i'd def have her on my bed, lol - night time cuddles all the way for me.

Washing powder does work because it's biological, so Ariel or Bold. I saw it on How clean is your house, the prog with Kim and Aggie and it's the only thing that gets rid of Kali's urine smell on the patio. Wash it and leave it for ten or fifteen mins, ten should be enough as she's only young and her urine won't be as strong as a great big puddle, then rinse off with clear water, pat dry with a paper towel or two and - PRESTO!

Re: Puppy help

Oh goodness she is gorgeous

We always shut Zimba in his crate at night and when were out, partly because it's supposed to help with toilet training. He used to cry at about 3am, go out for a wee and then settle until about 5.30-6ish.

I think it's fine for a puppy to go out in your garden before their first jab as long as there's been no unvaccinated dogs in there. When we picked Zimba at 6 weeks all the pups were out in the garden enjoying the sun. I think you need to teach she goes outside, rather than it's ok to inside and then cahnge the rules, if you see what I mean.
