At night time I have been putting her in a cage but leaving the door open and putting newspaper and a puppy pad down incase she needs the toilet through the night. Both nights I have got up at 2.30/3am to check on her and get her to do the toilet, then its back to sleep until 6.30ish - both mornings she has done both a pee and a poo on her newspaper/mat when I've come down. Should I carry on doing this or keep her closed in the crate?

She has been quite good going to the toilet during the day but has had a couple of accidents - one of which was on the carpet. I have cleaned it with Vanish and an odour preventing spray but she keeps sniffing the area as if she's going to pee there again. I have cleaned it again this morning with 1001 spray so hoping that does the trick - does anyone have any other solutions I could use?

Should I also start taking her outside for the toilet? She has had her first lot of injections last night so isn't fully vaccinated yet but there are no other dogs nearby and our garden is enclosed. At the moment her newspaper and puppy pads are by the back door - is it maybe an idea to wait until she is going to the newspaper all the time with no accidents before I start introducing something new?

thanks for any advice
At 8 weeks they still have accidents here and there. Regarding the night time toileting, if you are getting up anyway I would take her outside to pee. Using paper or pads at night and taking them out in the day can just confuse things and pup too. All day you are getting her out then at night its suddenly Ok to go in the house again. Maybe even set an alarm and take her out twice, its not usually for that long before they go through maybe a couple of weeks sometimes a little longer.

I would start taking her in the garden all the time in the day too now. Take her out every 30/45 minutes, when she starts to go give it a name in a happy voice, eventually they associated the Name with going so later it can be used as a toilet cue. When finished loads of praise and some really tasty treats. Look out for sniffing and scratching or circling indoors usually signs they aare looking for somewhere to go, although sometimes you dont see it until a bit later as when really young they often realise too late that they need to go. With age and growing though they become aware and the capacity to hold more and have to go less frequently increases. Take her out especially after drinking, eating, playing and sleeping as well, they usually need to go then.
Any accidents dont tell her off, it an make them nervous about going in front of you and more likely to sneak off to try and do it.

There are special pet cleaners to remove stains and odours like urine off and other similar ones as any smells left can encourage them, dont forget her smell is hundreds of times more efficient then ours and we might think its odour free but to her there is a smell left.

Expensive way of doing it but I did buy a carpet cleaner with mine and was great to suck up liquids and then shampoo thoroughly companies like vax do a special shampoo for homes with pets and a pre-treatment trigger spray too.
In fact they are great for doggie homes in general, there is often times when adults are unwell and decide to throw up or have iffy tummys and cant wait.
Mine has been a godsend through two pups and the odd adult illness.
