Dog petrified about lightning, help?

Hello all,

Basically got a mongrel mainly Collie, with some retriever and Labrador plus a few others we think. We got her when she was about 1 rescue dog it is now 3 year later. All we know of her all owners is they just started a family and couldn't handle her because she is very clever and can be a pain because of it at points. We have a small bit of land that she is always out on during the day and another dog to keep her company even if he is a lot dumber and getting old.

She is a lovely longing dog but just goes nuts when it even goes slightly dull outside because she it scared of lightning (fireworks to but these come and goes faster and we can watch her on nights like bonfire night). We figured she would grow out of it but if anything in the last 3 years she has slowly gotten worse, Whenever we are in we do what we can with her when lightning comes back she will bang on doors and got slightly mental to the point we are worried if she gets stuck outside or hurts her self.

Any Ideas how to help with this just doesn't feel right.

Re: Dog petrified about lightning, help?

My dog doesn't like fireworks/lightning but doesnt react to that extent bless her. Can you create a 'safe place' for her? if you have an under the stairs area for example or even buy a crate and leave the door open and put someplace quiet full of blankets and treats that she can retreat to, to relax. Also as difficult as it is don't react to her looks of panic etc, act as usual, talk, close the curtains, put the telly on slightly louder or some calming music. Maybe in her past home she was left in the garden while a storm or a display was taking place and it scared her for life to an unusual degree.

You can get thundershirts, which are calming.
