Question Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

...or am I chatting rubbish as usual?

Well my game is for my ball obsessed Dottie who I currently walk on a harness and Flexi-lead. She loves a good game of fetch but it can be a bit tedious at times and get a bit dull. (Well for me anyway!) we are also limited with the length she can run (because of the line)

So I (think!) I have invented a new game...great for dogs restricted on leads...

Upside Down Fetch!

Well it kinda is....basically, I get Dottie to sit (and click) wait...and then I chuck the ball up in the air directly above us and Dottie has to try and catch it (normally on the second bounce) or she hits it with her nose and chases it round!

I think it keeps her brain going too as she's concentrating on where the ball is going to land and I incorporate Clicker Training into it too, for sit, wait, drop etc.

I think its working as Dottie now drops the ball for me and lets me take it to throw it up again, where as before I had to have another ball to trade with.
It burns up energy and she never knows where the ball is going to land!

Now have I invented a great game? Or do you guys normally play this with your dogs?

In order for the game to work well, you do have to jump off the ground and look a fool when throwing it. Saying "Woohoo!" is optional

I found an old tennis ball down the field (these moments are highlights in my mad-dog loving/walking world) and at first Dottie didn't care for it, but after a few rounds of Upside Down Fetch, she loved the ball and carried it all the way home!

Whatdya think?

Re: Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

I'm loving the sound of pside down fetch
I think we possibly play something similar because Zipper is a rubbish at fetching and often knocks the ball around trying to pick it up

Re: Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

Sounds great!

Some people witnessed Kenzie's attempt at catching a dog treat dropped from above on Sunday (she didn't even open her mouth, it just hit her in the face ) so I'm not sure Kenz is the ideal player for Upside Down Fetch but it sounds fun! I'll try it next time I need a laugh at my dog's expense!!!

Re: Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

I play this kind of thing with Harley just to keep him guessing on where I throw it (he is an off lead doggie though). I think it keeps them stimulated and is a great idea on leads.

Re: Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

Sorry, I play this game too

One of my favourite games is tug, but the toy connected to a flexi-material slip lead, so I can fly it around a training area getting the dogs to chase and also not worry about being grabbed (accidently) about some big dog's mistimed bite in the process! It allows me to safely teach 'Take it', 'Leave it' and 'Drop it' commands. Not rocket science but the dogs love it!

I also play this game - love it .

I like the 'flying tug' game that Rottiefan has mentioned; may give that a whirl (no pun intended!!) .

Re: Have I invented the BEST game ever?!

Ah, I can see only one problem for me - I throw like a girl, so there is never any guarantee where my ball will go, up, down, side to side, behind - who knows, but my husband ducks when I chuck a ball. He's a coward, I've not smashed the glass in the greenhouse for 3 years now!

Love that game, but saying "woohoo" "wheesh" or "shawwwwwwmm" is mandatory if you ask me

Zac is the same. It's quite embarrassing really, maybe a few rounds of upside down fetch will get him better at it though. I shall have a go tonight!
