How often to bath a dog

I don't usually post in dog chat but this is for my carer. She's got a puppy think she said he is a cairn terrier x yorkie. How often should he be bathed. Gizmo has had parvo but is fully recovered and has his injections on Friday.

Re: How often to bath a dog

As DD says, I think most people bathe dogs as and when it's necessary. For example when your relative's Staffy does a wee on your puppy's back

When they're still young it might be worth giving them a couple of extra baths now and again so they get used to it, otherwise you might find yourself with an adult dog that refuses to get washed, no matter how badly they need to be cleaned!

Re: How often to bath a dog

I bath my boxer once a week, he's 12 weeks old and trying to get him used to the bath.

Saying that, I never use any soap, just quick in and a shower of water over him and he's out. Whilst it's been very hot here, I have put Duke in the bath as well with just a quick shower over and no soap as it helps him cool down.

I'll give it another week or so with my boxer pup and then it'll just be as and when needs. Fox poop and the like.

Re: How often to bath a dog

i only bath when it`s really really necessary as it can ruin a dogs coat giving them regular baths, plus they`re not like humans and don`t need to wash regularly. i`ve bathed jake twice since he came home 11 months ago (both times after he rolled in poop) and i`ve not bathed syd at all but may do as he lay in pee and the smell seems to be clinging to him

Re: How often to bath a dog

Yes I would recommend the puppy has a couple of baths to start with just to get him/her used to being bathed. Cairn Terriers have a stubborn streak where grooming is concerned - i've never come across one yet that hasn't wanted to chew my arms off so I would definitely encourage her to bath and brush the pup to get it used to being groomed. We had two identical looking Cairns in once (when I worked in a groomers) that belonged to totally seperate people. They were both horrid and were going for me even when I was getting them out of the holding crates. Then when the drying and clipping started - god help the groomer! They (along side a few other cairns) were the worst dogs i've ever seen and if anyone came to me with one, I would be very, very tempted not to do it. They frighten me!

Teaching pup to stand relatively still would be a huge time saving bonus for the groomer too

She was told by somebody not to bath Gizmo every week.

NicoleW said she only washes the dog down with water - that should be okay as you're not stripping oil out of the coat with shampoo. Also, a boxer will be really big once fully grown so more difficult to control if he doesn't like the bath!

Nothing wrong with a quick rinse imo
