I really could not believe what I just read!

Newfoundland Club of America Speaks About Dog Mauling Incident In Oxford - Oxford, CT Patch

The idea of a newfie deliberately hurting another dog is just so bizarre, I am stunned. I do hope they are not going to get a bad name over this, as they are the sweetest, gentlest dogs in the world.

God knows what awful breeding and/or upbringing they must have had.

Re: I really could not believe what I just read!

Funny you say that, the day Barney was to be placed to sleep there was an old white german shepherd covered in wounds that had been stitched up but he was missing half an hour and talking to the owners he needed 40+ stitches. He looked like he'd been mauled by a tiger but after speaking with the owner it turned out to be a Newfoundland who had just attacked the old shepherd out of no where, the owner didn't turn up for almost 10 minutes! We had all been talking about how surprising it was that it was a newfie

I think it goes to show ANY breed of dog can be dangerous when they want to.

certainly any breed can be dangerous in the wrong hands, but what a newfie would have to put up with before turning doesn't bear thinking about. No one in their right mind would let a dog that size out of their sight of ten minutes or even ten seconds, in my opinion. They can easily do damage by accident, but to do it on purpose.................?

I would expect a gsd to win to be honest. Ferdie runs back to his mum if another dog gets niggly with him, he is such a wimp. Once, he has retaliated, and it was really scary and completely unexpected.

I agree, it's scary to think about. The owner of the shepherd said he was so surprised as his son had a newfie who was lovely so didn't think anything of it when one came bounding up out of no where only to then jump on his sheperd.

This Gsd was very old, I think about 13/14 years old the owner said he didn't even fight back he just laid there screaming while the owner tried to get the dog of him.

Oh, that is awful. Poor thing. I think sometimes we forget that they are dogs, after all. I know that just recently Joshua has been giving off some bad vibes to other dogs, but it is not something I can see, he seems his usually friendly self. His arthritis has been bad last few weeks, so it could be something to do with that. If I were a dog I could tell you exactly what is happening, but I'm not so I can't!

I am always very careful with mine. I don't believe they would start anything, especially Ferdie, but if they take a dislike to another dog, you can't always see it coming, can you?

Aww poor lad, probably is. I can say to be honest when i'm in pain i'm a grump so dogs probably feel the same.

Of course not and vry true, it's quite scary though.

Well, as I said I think we sometimes forget that they are dogs. I can't ever see a newfoundland hurting a person, especially a child, but I suppose other dogs can give off bad vibes that we don't know about. There are too many puppy farmers breeding these dogs as well, and they could not care less about temperament.

It is a big responsibility having a dog this size, or any dog for that matter, but you do have to be very careful.

That's probably why he doesn't like them! There used to be a man who lived round the corner who told me that his newfie didn't like other dogs, but I think a lot of it is fear of letting them mix. You get so scared they are going to tread on the other one, that it is easier not to let them mix, which does no good at all. Mine love other dogs, but the other dogs do not love them. A lot of them look so scared, go absolutely rigid, that I have to get them away, but they are fine with dogs their own size.
