Re: To go to training class or not, need to decide in 30 mins!

Are there actually a lot of training classes in your area? I know you are having problems re the booster vacs but you seem to be having a lot of trouble finding one!

There are about 5 training groups & loads of behaviourists within about a 2 mile radius of me... and that's not counting agility clubs, flyball and ringcraft. I thought we were pretty rubbish on the dog clubs front but we might actually be quite lucky!

However, all you southerners get all the KC dog shows - we seem to have very few!

I have no idea really. I don't know what is a lot where I was before there were barely any and the ones we did have didn't tend to have websites so you only found them via leaflets or word of mouth.

If I Google where I live and dog training I get a list up and I've asked a good 10-12 now. Replies from about half saying no and the others just not replying.

Lightbulb APDT-uk lists member-trainers by county or region/country

I went on the APDT [website] & only found one in 20 miles of me
from the APDT-uk website. Go to 'find a trainer', click on 'Essex'.

APDT-uk members are also listed on the thread, APDT loose [lose] more members'.
i counted the current members, & copied the area-lists for accuracy. i did NOT copy the lists as presented, tho:
some members live in X-county or X-town, & offer training in another county of town; since i was counting them,
i removed double or triple entries, & only listed them by home-address.

so if the particular member trains at home AND at a training-club, or at home AND a business premise,
the 'APDT loose' thread does not list the alternate sites - just the home-address.

Re: To go to training class or not, need to decide in 30 mins!

Someone from the weekend has replied to me about classes, hopefully we'll be able to slot in and go to those. Its this place:

Take the Lead Dog Training

i went over Annete Boneham's website & it says nothing about what tools or methods are in use.
she is also not an APDT-uk member - nor APBC nor COAPE. that doesn't mean she's a horrible trainer -
it only means that i know zip about her training philosophy, nor what she will use while training.

i have NO idea what 'Guilds' canine studies are. If it were me, i'd want to see a class before signing-up.

City & Guilds is one of the UK's leading award bodies. About 14 - 15 years ago they set up the City & Guilds (7622) Certificate in Canine Studies but I do not think it even exists now. I did it, going to an agricultural college for one day a week and was taught by a man I already knew in the world of dog training whose background in teaching had landed him the job. He is now head of the Small Animal Care section of that college. The course was very in depth and encompassed training, behaviour, physiology of the dog, nutrition, basic grooming, Kennel welfare etc etc. It was very interesting and I got a lot out of it. I still have two huge folders full of the stuff I produced as course work and it has proved a useful reference from time to time. Sadly, I do not believe there was sufficient take up for subsequent courses and it was dropped?

I agree. Go along without a dog and sit in on a class. You will notice more that way without having the distraction of your own dog with you.

it sounds EXCELLENT - i wonder if they'd consider reviving it, perhaps giving them a poke would help?

i'd think there would be considerable interest, now...
