Hello!

Some of you may know that i am thinking about getting a puppy, think i have decided on a cavalier king charles anyway im now thinking of whether to get a boy or a girl.
Can anyone give me any advice on this?
Also ive been thinking about vet bills etc, roughly on average how much is it for a dog to be neutered and how much are the injections.

thanks very much in advance!!

Re: which sex and how much to neuter?

A spay is generally more expensive than a castrate as there is a lot more work to be done, it's a more tricky operation plus they are more medical waste.

Can't really help you on the jabs price as I get mine free. Well I pay around £100 a year to get unlimited consults, annual jabs, frontline and worming tablets.

It differs from vets to vet, so ring round a few.

I take meg to Banfield Pet Hospital, which is inside My Pet Stop. I used to work there actually mypetstop® - Services - Banfield®, The Pet Hospital

I rang my local vets before I got my puppy to enquirer on the cost of the injections and the price of the neutering. This is what I was quoted injections £46.30 with this I got free flea treatment and worming treatment. Neutering Dog £57.30 Bitch £97.30. I ended up with a bitch and she's brill she's so loving.

Re: which sex and how much to neuter?

I've heard all sorts of differing advice. Since we've had Zach I've read in numerous places that a bitch is best to go for as a first dog but we got a boy and havent had toooo many problems lol just the usual puppy/new owner stuff.

Neutering is obviously much less invasive than spaying and so costs less. Our vets charge £85 for boys £125(i think) for girls. Injections are about 25 quid each and you need two in the first few weeks. You will also need frontline which costs around £20 for 3 pipets and worming tablets which are about £30 for 8.

Good luck with your decision xx

Re: which sex and how much to neuter?

I have found dogs to be more cuddly/clingy and bitches more independant. Maybe just a gundog thing though.

Sorry guys disagree my Bitch is so loving follows me everywhere and loves sitting next to me on the settee and loves loads of cuddles. I think it just depends on the dog.

Re: which sex and how much to neuter?

I have 1 of each - they are both very loving, the bitch follows me around and crys if I go upstairs and she can't come, but it's the dog that has to sit right up against me and will lick me and cry if I don't stroke him.
Each animal is different, when we went to get our dog we had intended to get a bitch but he was the one for us, so when we got our second dog we got a bitch to have a nice balance.

Re: which sex and how much to neuter?

I think it depends on the dog rather than the sex! I have a male and a female. both are very loving and wouldn't change them for the world!

If you cant decide, I think maybe you should phone a professional Cavalier breeder and ask if they have a litter on the way and when they are born go and have a look at them and see which one you think would suit you.

A friend of mine a couple of years ago did this and was intending to get a female, but after visiting the pups, she decided to go for a male.

Hope this helps
