Re: All dogs to be muzzled

Some people just don't give up, if they are that bothered about dogs having no chance with kids just don't let your kids go near a dog and problem solved

It will never happen (all dogs muzzled) so I don't really have much more to say on it. But this is why I generally don't let kids sit and make a huge fuss of Rupert, a damn lot of people are over protective enough as it is I know Roo is good with kids but I don't need to let him be petted by strange kids regularly. This is exactly why we avoid the big parks at weekends/summer hols, its constant 'can I touch his tail' or just grabbing it if we go within reach and tbh I wouldn't blame him for biting someone if they did that.

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

I can understand why some idiots in the comments will have gone with the knee-jerk reaction of "all dogs should be muzzled in public" but fortunately the majority of the non-dog-owning public know that this is unnecessary and that the majority of dogs will not attack without a reason to do it. This attack probably happened due to the kid doing something wrong. For starters, the kid was stroking the dogs for 10 minutes without any problems? There's the problem right there! No way I would ever let any strangers stroke my dog for longer than a minute, especially not a kid. I doubt Izzy would ever bite anyone but I'm not giving her the chance. You can say hello to my dog and pet her if she doesn't mind, but I'm gonna watch you the whole time just in case. I'm not saying the kid deliberately did something wrong, but little kids simply cannot understand dogs. I guarantee that the dog that lunged would have been softly growling or snarling before it lunged, but the kid didn't know to spot the signs and carried on anyway. Always quick to blame the dog, nobody ever stops to think "why did the dog do it?"

This comment says it best:

"It's time that children were banned in public places. You can't go anywhere without idiot parents allowing their badly trained offspring to roam around everywhere and destroy the peace of the neighbourhood. Introduce compulsory parenting examinations and licences for child-owning, and we'll see no more of these headlines..."

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

I let kids stroke my lot under strict supervision (its to their benefit to be well socialized coz this area is jam packed with loud, shouty, grabby little hooligans!!). However I wouldnt let kids stroke them for 10 minutes! they would most def of had enough way before that.
Its also suspicious that the elderly owners made no comment. If your dog had never done that before you would be mortified and apologising profusely, I think would be in tears to think my dog had done that.

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

I never let children within touching distance of any of my dogs, large or small. Having them pet the dog is of no benefit to my dogs or me so I just don't allow it. It's a risk that isn't worth taking no matter how much either may seem to enjoy it, they're not children's toys they're a living creature who has every right not to want a stranger fussing it, not fair on the child either to be put at this risk.

My kids always grew up with dogs but were told to leave other peoples dogs alone as you don't know what may happen with an unknown dog. I can't believe people still ask if their kids can stroke dogs anyway, if they want them to pet a dog why not get one of their own, if not leave other people's dogs alone.

Poor boy, not his fault all this happened, he was told by grown people that he could stroke the dogs and look who's now paying the price for that bad info!

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

I always pick mine up if a child wants to stroke him and then it is easy to walk away after a couple of strokes.

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

sorry but i don`t see what`s so wrong with a kid asking an owner of a dog if they can pet them?? such a shame what happened to this kid but i don`t see how people on here can be saying it`s irresponsible letting your kid as to pet another person`s dog and saying if they want that they should buy a dog of their own?? that`s great advice when a lot of people don`t have the time or finances not to mention if they own the dog themselves it will never turn on the kid, course it won`t

as for the compulsory muzzling it will never happen but if it does then i`ll volunteer to go around here muzzling some of the foul moth bitches who i know are a risk to others....it`s a pity we can`t do that to humans really isn`t it?

Re: All dogs to be muzzled

I dont agree with never letting them meet. Wouldnt that just create a unsocialized dog who will probably bite a child if one comes up to him unexpectedly?
I dont have kids and no-one I know has them if I kept the dogs away from strange kids then how could I make them safe to be in public?? Besides Adam and Hannah would never forgive me if I kept them away from tiny people!! They adore all children from babies up to teenagers.
