Crossing roads with dogs.

I was just wondering how many people get their dogs to stand, or sit before crossing a road. I've always done this with my dogs , right back to when I was a child in the 60s. At one time , it seemed to be the norm, but just recently I've noticed that the majority of people round here don't bother, not even on main roads.
It just makes sense to me, to have a calm dog, waiting patiently to cross the road.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

Lola is only 13 weeks but right from day oneshe has been told to sit at the kerb

She then gets a treat at other side of road

Its something we did with the dogs as a kid

So dont see any reason not to do it now

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I've always got my dogs to sit to cross the road, but if it's really wet I just say wait I hate the thought of them having to sit on very wet ground.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I have asked Tummel to sit and stay from the day we got him as he can be quite nervous around traffic and this focused him enough to calm down

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I have always got my lad to sit at the kerb to cross the road, he even does it off lead as well, but he has done it so many times that he naturally does it without being told to.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I have always trained my dogs to stand just back from the kerb when we need to cross the road. I think it's only common sense, it's safer for the dogs, for me and for other road users. It's also helping with making the whippets calmer with traffic as they are very shy around fast moving vehicles.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

Oh yes my dogs always sit before crossing. Mine don't even have to be asked they know!

I think it can potentially save a dogs life if ever they got off lead and went near a road and they know the wait and sit command!

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I dont always bother TBH. They do know the 'wait' command and will do so but I usually only get them to do it on major roads when I am trying to concentrate on not getting run over.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I don't bother, they know what wait means. I cross so many side roads it would make our walks take forever if we had to stop to do a sit at each junction.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

Dave is always told to 'Stand' when we get to a road, tried Sit but he is having none of it. Though he does stand really good.
I walk him off lead in the evenings if I am nipping to the shop as the two roads I have to cross are dead ends and he will stand until I say 'Cross'
Walking down the street though I dont as we have to cross about 10 roads to get to Lauras and when its quiet it would take ages to get there if we stopped at every road! If I wait he does though.

Xiva is asked to 'Sit' before we cross a road. Every road as I feel I was a bit lax with this when the other two were wee and now Dixie doesnt she is just in a rush to get going.
