Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I just let both my dogs run across the road.

So far so good, they've only had a few near misses.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I've ALWAYS had Dobby sit and wait before crossing the road. And if he tries to pull forward I'll make him sit again and wait untill I say "Go on" and cross the road.

You are joking aren't you? I'm thought you lost a dog in a RTC? Sorry if I got you mixed up with another

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

Mine have always been taught to sit at roads. They know and will normally sit without being asked, and they won't get up and cross until told to do so. Unless it's Harvey who thinks the whole thing is just a very daft idea and will grumble and whinge, and just crouch his bum down without actually sitting - it's something we're working on

It quite possibly saved the life of my old Bernese many years ago - he got lost on a walk one day, and when I finally found him he was sat at the kerb of a very busy road. Goodness knows what would have happened had he of tried to go across by himself.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

Yes it was a joke, albeit a very horrible one. I've an acquired sense of humor sometimes, must be the masses amount of coke I've had this evening.

Yes, I lost my Lollie (collie cross) to a RTC. Slipped her collar and ran straight into the road.

I think after this I've been extra vigilent around roads. I make the dogs walk on the other side of me so I'm the one near the roads, we walk as far away from them as possible, and generally will try and find somewhere quiet to cross and ALWAYS make them sit and put them into a "wait" until I release them. They won't even cross the road if I start crossing until I say "OK". I've really drilled it into them though (One being a 13 week old boxer). Still scares the hell out of me sometimes. I won't even walk the new pup on a collar, he wears a very snug fitting harness (though not too tight). I'm sure over time I'll be a bit more confident and not as fearful with my dogs crossing the road, but it was still quite recent when I lost my Lollie.

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

My old family BC was trained to stop at roads, so he used to wander quite far ahead bt always stopped and waited at the kerb for someone to catch up!

It would get ridiculous if I made the dogs sit and wait at every road. Alot of the houses here open directly onto the street so there are tons of cars parked in the road. I would have to get them to sit, run out between the cars for a looksee and come back for them, then cross!

Re: Crossing roads with dogs.

I've mentioned a few times on here, Tiger used to have a habit of lunging/lurching out into the middle of the road, he dragged me off the kirb a few times and it was pretty dangerous so I have been getting him to sit at every side road or back street or crossing we come to. Yes it's time consuming but i'd rather our walks were a little bit longer than be squished by a bus - then there'd be no walks

I am getting him to do it at every opportunity though just because it's fairly new to him and I want him to eventually do it every time without thinking - if he knows he doesn't always have to do it, he will make it as difficult as possible so I have to be a lot more stubborn than him! I've been stood at an empty side road for over 5 minutes before now trying to get him to sit..... cars have stopped to let us cross and i've had to wave them on like a loony and point to the dog to try and get the message across that I am trying to train him... all the while Tiger is stood staring up at me probably wishing he didn't know me

Once he is doing it all the time without being prompted (and he is starting to, he's done it about 3 times without being asked) then I won't feel the need to do it every time but he's very stubborn and needs to be made to do it every time without fail while he's still learning it
