Question socialisation?

My Reuben is almost 6 months now, and whenever we see another dog he gets so excited and wants to play, but I dont have anyone that he can!

At puppy classes they didnt really mix, and its a few weeks before he can start puppy agility

Im worried if he doesnt socialise now at this important age that he could have issues later.

Tbh I would love another, but OH is putting his foot down

Any ideas please?

Do you have a park near you? I've been taking mine to the park every day this week and usually there's at least one person who stops to let the dogs play together. Even if we don't meet any dogs to play with it's good for Kenzie to practice meeting dogs appropriately.

Like I say we've done this every day for one week and already the difference in Kenzie is huge - she is SO much better at greeting other dogs and doesn't whine and pull and bark any more when she sees a dog she can't play with.

Otherwise are there any dog walking groups near you?

thanks for replying.

I always take him to parks close by and we pass dogs, but very rare is there the opportunity to introduce reu to them.

Cant find any dog walking groups. Had been considering advertising in case someone was having difficulty walking their oen dog, and i would take it with us. Only prob being I cant guarantee times/days as depends what my health is like.

When he sees a dog he starts to pull and cries, he has just started doing this, and its awful, cos its just to play

Re: socialisation?

I think I was lucky where I took my dogs for puppy classes they ran a 'puppy romp', 'Junior Romp, and a 'dog club'.
Puppy romp/Junior romp was all about socialisation and interacting with other pups/dogs then as they got older it was about interacting with other dogs and listening to the owners then dog club is fun activities and maintaining/introducing training.
A lot of the socialisation type classes are outdoors so it's a more 'real' enviroment.
I spent many a wet Saturday morning stood in a field and paying £5 for the privlage so Lilly wouldn't be scared of other dogs

It might be worth asking your puppy classses what else they offer or ringing around/googling to find out whats available in your area - I found my classes by googling

Re: socialisation?

I took Kenzie to a Social Walk Class for a while - maybe there's something like this in your area?

I have to say though, once-a-week classes just didn't cut it for Kenzie. The only thing I've found to work is getting her out meeting dogs every day, she just seems to need the consistency.

Re: socialisation?

thanks

The romp classes sound like exactly what he would love! Wish they did them here.

Reu is still all paws, so would be great if he could learn to greet without pawing! My OH said I should just walk over to people and ask if reu can play, but thats too scary! lol

I think your right just going to a class once a week isn't really enough - what I found helpful was that the staff took the time to train me how to handle Lilly when we were out and about so she wasn't reactive to other dogs.
I think the ideal is a combination of both.

Don't be shy - if you see dogs interacting with each other then why not ask if Reu can join in
I think you need to teach him to sit and wait before yo let him though or you'll be taching him that pulling and crying means he can play and you want him to learn that calm and quiet means play time.

thats the problem, its just people walking, you hardly ever see a dog off the lead or someone who looks approachable.

We used to see 2 people all the time and they would let reu meet and greet but havent seen them for bout 3 weeks now

He is perfect on the lead, and most of the time off, and he is fine walking past most dogs, its just when they look over he starts to pull. He literally walks on his back legs.

He sits when we get to roads etc, will work on getting him to stand still

T'aint to late, but will be harder. The socialisation stage for dogs is between 8 and 16 weeks. Thats when he should have been exposed to everything he will come across in his life.
