lapdogs question

Had a chat today with a woman who walking her Chihuahua as i was walking mine.

She said she doesn't allow hers up on the sofa or her lap and it sleeps in the utility room. Quite aside from the fact i'm not entirely sure what a utility room is, is it not a little cruel to leave lapdogs alone and not allow them to snuggle up close?

I don't allow milly to sleep on my bed, but she does have her bed right next to mien and she does leap up at night sometimes.

Re: lapdogs question

i suppose they could get used to it like any other dog
depneds what the dog gets during the day really as to how I would judge it
if its gets enought love excercise and stimulation then there is no problem

but essentially they are companion dogs and designed to be close by

Leaving any breed of dog alone for most of the time is cruel, but not if it just sleeps alone - no, and not allowing them to snuggle up close LOL - no it's not cruel - they are dogs - we label them as lapdog, the dogs themselves don't think that way.

Re: lapdogs question

i think my lapdog would feel like his nose had been put out of joint if i didn`t let him snuggle on my lap.....all 25kg of him

tbh it`s not cruel not to let them up for a cuddle regardless of their size - they`re still dogs at the end of the day. i couldn`t live like that with my dog but others do and think i`m weird for cuddlign and kissing mine so i guess it`s just down to personal preference

Re: lapdogs question

Actually Chihuahuas are lap dogs!! (what on earth would they hunt???)
Perhaps the lady was used to having bigger breeds or if older might have been stricter with what she let dogs do. Personally I cant see the point of getting a companion breed that loves to sit with you and cuddle and then not allowing it to do so. I think that kind of close contact fulfills a need in a toy breed like sporting activities do for hunting dogs or agility for working breeds.
My lot sleep in the kitchen but mainly coz I work 2 nights a week and it would be confusing for them to sleep with me some nights but not others. They will always be allowed to snuggle with me on the sofa though.

Re: lapdogs question

aah well I better tell my 3 supersized lapdogs that from now on my lap is my own private kingdom & I'll defend it with my life
I was wondering what chis might hunt as well, I thought they were bred specifically to be companions

Re: lapdogs question

Well, I wish someone would tell Adam that after he catches the spider he shouldnt drop it at my feet to play with!! (he's actually a much better fly catcher!!).

I think the jury is out on wether Chihuahua's were bred to be companions or just tasty snacks!!LOL
