Re: lapdogs question

Our Lily's breeder lives down a track surrounded by fields and allotments so does sometimes see rats around. Aparently Lily's mother Lila is a better ratter than the terriers he keeps as ratting dogs.

Re: lapdogs question

as much as i love my yorkie/chi as a lapdog, i did read somewhere that placing them anywhere on or over your body means dominance.
so i did an experiment where i didn't let him sit on me or lean any part of his body on me for a few days.

he was the most obedient dog and submissive to me the entire time!

he wouldn't sit on the bed unless i was there, if i left the room he would jump off and sit in his own bed till i returned.
he would wait for a signal from me to eat his food even when his bowl is down.
would stop barking immediately when i told him to stop, and barked much less at things in general.
his recall at the park was much better and his growling at other dogs have stopped. its been truly amazing.

he does get the occasional cuddle but his days of lounging around on my lap are now over!

i urge you to try this at home!

Nah, thanks.. I love my little cuddlemonkeys!! Even it it means they do misbehave on occassion.
I can safely say that Chihuahuas should never be used in fox hunting though. Not after the time my lot found a poorly fox and took chase after it. Even though Adam had a good hold of its bottom the darned thing still took off into the hedges dragging a very persistant and hopeful Chi after it!!LOL

Re: lapdogs question

Chihuahuas are ratting dogs, they are very popular choice for rat and mice killing because they are small but quick. I spoke with a Mexican who has 4 of 'em and explained they were all working dogs not lap dogs, they lived outdoors most of the time by choice. He told me many of his friends and family back in Mexico use Chihuahuas for this purpose.

No, it's not cruel to not cuddles and have them sleep with you. Many people don't allow their dogs in the frountroom or upstairs. I'd rather that then outside chained up and forgotten about.

Re: lapdogs question

I expect that Chihuahua's who are used for ratting are very different then KC pedigree Chi's here. In fact Im not even sure who would have a bigger mouth out of a big fat rat and a teeny 4Ib Chi!!

Sparkle will become famous soon enough
Re: lapdogs question

Chis were bred as companions not working dogs. They use to be bed warmers for royalty etc.

Mexican chihuahuas are v v different to the standard we have now and they also treat their dogs very differently over there. I don't agree with chihuahuas living outside.

Saying that mine are lap dogs but they are all dog they charge around the park at 200 miles an hour and walk every day (weather permitting)

Re: lapdogs question

As long as the dog gets love, attention and the walks and care it needs, why would it be cruel. The dogs are dogs...not toys! We call them lap dogs! Even those bred as "companions", still doesn't mean they are bred to sit on your lap all the time.

My dogs get on my couch, my bed etc, that's my choice but I wouldn't call anyone who has rules that says their dogs don't cruel?

Re: lapdogs question

I dont think anyone is saying its cruel....just abit odd!
Kinda like getting as Border Collie and not wanting to do any activities with it or take it for long walks. Surely you get a lapdog coz you want it to sit on your lap??(its a default setting with Chi's....if a lap is available then they want on!!)
If you want a dog to sleep alone, stay off your lap and not be very affectionate then get a Chow instead!
