just been offered a puppy...

...someone from my gym has just called, offering me a puppy. He knows i would love another dog, for a playmate for Milly and a pet for me.

It's a Staffy, a blue.

I have a Chihuahua and Milly is aggressive around other dogs, unless she already knows them. i was thinking that if i introduced Milly to the Staffy as a puppy then she would be fine.

However i turned it down. Not sure why.

Did i do the right thing? This chap knows that my all time favorite breed is a Doberman.

i think you did the right thing, to me it sounds a little strange but not only that i`m sure if you thought this were the dog for you then you wouldn`t have turned it down! i think it`s best to work on milly`s issues firstly a bit more plus if you have a certain breed in mind anyway then it`s best to stick to that breed - as i was told when looking for a springer - it`s easy to go for the first dog but then, as much as you love that dog, you may always kick yourself for not getting the dog you have wanted for so long!

Yes, I do agree with this - a dog is such a commitment that the love of a particular breed gets you through the difficult times when all is not going to plan....I'm sure one will appear when the time is right...

Re: just been offered a puppy...

Well done for seeing sense, many would have taken it and probably regretted it later. Your lil Millie needs all your attention now.

It's good to go with your gut feelings and stick with them.

They are usually the best decisions we make

Re: just been offered a puppy...

I think everything happens for a reason and if you turned that puppy down without even really knowing why then there will be a reason for it

Work on millies issues, follow your dream and wait for your Dobe

Re: just been offered a puppy...

I think you did the right thing. We were in a similar scenario with Lola, i wanted to get her a playmate but she is aggressive towards other dogs on lead or unless she doesnt know them. We searched and searched and in the end decided a puppy was the way forward and as we had always wanted a whippet that is what we ended up with :-) they get on great and because we love the breed it defo gets you through the tough puppy stages alot easier!

Re: just been offered a puppy...

Def the right idea. Although it sounds like a puppy would be your best option (my girls arent very dog friendly but they both adore their little pack.).
Plus with such a size difference you would have to be prepared to keep them seperate when not supervised.
