Happy tail

I've been doing a bit of research on Shannow's tail injury and apparently it's known as Happy Tail because she bangs it when she wags it, and she has been wagging it a lot since she came here. The kitchen looked like a crime scene after she greeted me this afternoon.

It seems it would stand a better chance of healing quickly if I bandage it to prevent further knocks.

Anyone else with a dog who has Happy Tail?

All tips on how to treat/prevent it gratefully received.

Re: Happy tail

lol, just what used to happen with our Dane. Shows she's a appy bunny though and wait til it slaps you round the legs, even worse if you've just got out of the bath and they're wet!

Think a bandage is all you can do and hopefully as she gets used to her new happy life she'll calm down on the wagging.

Re: Happy tail

Its a common greyhound injury, its amazing how much blood ends up everywhere from a small wound. Happy tail treatment. Sometimes folk use a hair curler/plastic tube over the end so that it has some protection if it gets whacked again and the wound can air.

Re: Happy tail

Yep same as reply above I've used the case a syringe comes in with strong plaster to hold onto the tail before or failing that vet wrap
Hope it heals soon

Re: Happy tail

Ely had happy tail when we first visited him and bought him home - so I can just echo what was said above. It's really important that you leave the end of the bandage open - otherwise it can lead to them needing to have the end of their tail amputated.

Re: Happy tail

I'm curious about this.. How did you dog get injured?? Just Suki wags her tail 24/7, she doesn't care what she hits etc and it's not easy to stop, especially if she's talking to someone.. Everyone thinks it's cute

I think she banged it on the door. Bizkit and Pip are always wagging their tails and this has never happened to the but there hair is much thicker on their tails.

I have read much conflicting information on how to deal with happy tail so I called the vet and they told me how to bandage it. It looks better today. I took the bandage off for walkies so it could get some air and once she wakes up I'll bandage it again.

Re: Happy tail

So did she make a wound in here tail?! I always worry about Suki's tail because she does wag it continuously, I swear she'll have hip problems when she's older..

Re: Happy tail

Yes it looks like this
From what I've reads it looks like it's a very common injury in sight hounds
