Re: Why do I bother!!

I dont let my off lead dogs approach on lead dogs unless the owner says its ok but if I see off lead dogs I automaticaly assume that they wont be dog aggressive and allow mine to approach. Maybe I will think twice in the future

Re: Why do I bother!!

if my dog s off lead and another dog apporaches i always put my dog on the lead.. it could be a chi or a great dane, its for both the dogs safety. I always ask if its ok to introduce.

Tbh i would presume if the dogs werent put back on the lead that they were ok with other dogs too..

I dont like seeing any dogs run over to us. Never 100% the outcome, but thats cos id rather be over cautious

where i walk my dog there are signs asying dogs must be on leads at all time, i just presumed it was law (even though i therefore break it, although we go to an empty field lol)?

Generally a good rule of thumb! Im sure you are sensible enough though to realiese that if the owner is calling the dogs away and actively avoiding you there might be a reason why they dont want the dogs to meet.
I know my lot are intimidated by large dogs (mainly coz Ive tested with various sizes and they accept far less polite behaviour from smaller dogs coz they are less scary to them). However I dont see leads being the ultimate annswer.
The last time an off lead dog caused problems for me when mine were on lead it was a Staffie in the street. Im sure you can imagine the chaos caused by trying to seperate 3 dogs on leads from a 4th larger one whilst all 4 are fighting, yelping, gowling and getting tangled round and round your legs!!

Re: Why do I bother!!

I agree very much that the owner should have respected you and listened. You know your dog at the end of the day.

I had a situation not long after we got Ripley that an owners dog was Offlead she and her family were quite a way away and her dog came over. Rips was on a lead as we were still learning what she was like with dogs and also whether she could be trusted offlead.

She's not dog aggressive at all. But she will tell dogs off if they make a pest around her back end. But as I said we were still getting to know her. This dof was making a pest of himself and clearly rips was not happy. The woman's you Son came Over to get the dog to no avail . We call out to the woman. Can you call your dog away Please perfectly politely . She just said oh he's fine. We explained rips is a rescue and we have not had her very long and still she was not calling her dog off. All the while her dog is pestering Rips.

Ripley eventually as dogs do gave a warning snap ( just one single little air snap to tell him to tell him to go away )and the woman goes on saying we should not be bringing her out. And still she had not called her dog away!!!!

If it had been my dog I would have apologised

Made me furious !!!!! And also who let's there young child try to get there dog from another dog!!!

Any way back to the thread.

What I wanted to add is dog owners may know and trust their dogs but other people know their dogs too. And should listen to them.
