Question R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve...

I've been told the R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve dogs

A friend of mine had been looking forward to re-homing a dog from them, they'd had their home check etc, and upon going to see the dog again (to make sure it got on ok with everyone in the family) they were told it had already been re-homed

Wonder why they've stopped reserving

I can understand it will eliminate time wasters, and people they may not seem suitable to re-home too... but I think it's sad for the genuine people out there to lose out on a dog that they would like to be part of their family

Re: R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve...

awww that's sad

So if you are having a home check done and have already chosen the dog- why then can't it be reserved

So they are going to spend time and money on home-checking and the end result could be you won't be having a dog because they have given it to some-one else???

Madness!!

I understand regarding time wasters etc... and the frustrations of rescues but they really need to be wanting people to adopt not put even more barriers in place.

Re: R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve...

first i`ve heard of it, the rspca i volunteer in they`re reserved pending home check. sounds more like someone forgot to mark him as booked and just made up an excuse? i`ve never heard of a rescue doing that - not even many tears who basically only give 24-48 hours after passing the home check to collect the dog (even though mine had kc i still had to collect).

Is that right about Many tears? I didnt realise they had that ruling? What if you live quite a way away and have to arrange the travel? What do they do if you cant make it in that time? Unreserve the dog and make you apply again?

Re: R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve...

i`ve just checked their site and they`ve changed it now to 3 days for collection or 5 days if you have children of school age and need to travel (meaning if you don`t have young kids it`s 3 days regardless of where you need to travel). they were quite strict on that when i passed for syd and said they normally put the dog straight back up for adoption if you can`t collect in that time frame. if, however, you`ve already passed the homecheck and go to the centre etc to view a dog (even if you haven`t reserved said dog) they will just let you take the dog home that same day and fill in the rehoming app there and then - i know when we doubted having syd they told us to choose any other dog and we could take them home the same day. basically they expect you to have transport in place in case you pass the homecheck, i don`t blame them though as they have a large volume of dogs coming in and need the space/resources - when i got syd they had 90 dogs coming in the following day they`re not like other centres that will let you come up to get to know the dog and spend time with them before taking it home, you basically have the time in between reserving the dog and having your homecheck done to do that

Re: R.S.P.C.A no longer reserve...

Never heard anything like that from the RSPCA.

A friend of mine was looking to rescue a dog from our council pound, she had reserved the dog in the morning and gone to collect it in the afternoon (they can't homecheck which is a shame but I suppose they need to just get the dogs out of kennels) and on turning up at about 4pm after reserving the dog at about 11am, they had rehomed her to someone else - even though they claimed to have 'reserved' her for my friend!

This happened to the same friend with two other dogs, one of them (a tri colour EBT cross) was being collected by someone else as she turned up to collect him herself they literally walked past her, put him in their car and drove away with him. She didn't bother going back again and decided to buy a SBT x Husky puppy who was a private rehome from someone who'd only had him 6 days. She didn't get him neutered and he ended up siring a litter with her little Lancashire Heeler x bitch if the rescue hadn't have let her down on the first dog (a SBT bitch) the whole 'accidental' (I don't believe it was, she knew her bitch wasn't spayed and obviously knew about him) litter could have been avoided.

However, when we got Ruby from that same pound a year previous, they reserved her properly for us. Now they seem to do the same again, the dogs often come up a 'reserved' on their website so who knows.
