Hi... any whippet owners??

Hi guys, been a while since I was on here and never really posted regularly. My profile will need an update as I've only dogs now as pets.

I'm delighted with our new addition, a whippet pup... a live wire! She has settled in great, only had her a week and I'm surprised at her confidence with the other dogs already.

I'd love to get into a sport with her in due time, I love agility but our other dogs don't share the interest! Any whippet owners here into agility? Also would be great to know fellow owners anyway to share experiences

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

I have whippet/pointer x but her soul is a whippet soul
She loves company, be close to us is her mission as well as running. Whippets are very gentle dogs. So long I found only one negative: they mature up to 4 years! That's why if you are thinking about neutering choose age wisely. Halle is rescue, we took her when she was 2,5 and she already have been done. IMO too early. I'm not doing with her agility because she is afraid of equipment

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

Hey there,

We rescued a whippet in March and she is called Molly. She is approximately 2 years old and a bundle of joy. We don't do agility or anything like that as he had a few issues when we got her. However, having being brought up with border collies and cross breeds, my head has been turned. They are the most gentle and placid dogs I have ever come accross and so loving as well. Molly loves nothing better than snuggling up beside me on the sofa or in bed. My OH has been relgated to the sofa some nights as he doesn't want to disturb as as we look so peaceful (or so he says).

Freyja on here also owns whippets and she provided me with some really useful info when I first got Molly so I would recommend checking some of her threads.

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

I'm here I have whippets loads of them. I'm about to go to bed as I'm up at 4.30 and we've just got back from a football match.

One of my whippets Amber loves to jump and has done fun agility. A friend who runs agailty classes says I should give it a go with her but I just don't have time.

I'll post again tomorrow.

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

Thanks for the replies all, we used to have a lurcher that had alot of whippet in her sadly we had her put down at the beginning of the year. I tried agility with her but she was scared of the equipment but used to enjoy running with me. I don't mind if the pup takes to it or not I do like to have something that I do with the dogs one-to-one though... maybe snuggling on the sofa will do! My husband takes our dogs rabbiting most weekends which they love so this is why I like to do something myself with them that they also enjoy.

I'll definately be the one taking her to puppy classes once she's had her jabs.

Usually puppies can go to training classes after second jab. Find the class and go ask them, don't wait until last jab. You dog will miss all socialisation period.
I admired you, whippets are sweat but before they grown up... That could kill me

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

I have a whippet x staffy who is currently doing agility. But his mind seems to get pre-occuiped when the bunnys go by.

We also take him and my other 3 boys to Lure Coursing - which you could get into once he is old enough?

Some pics of the event here:

Had a fantastic weekend!

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

Is your whippet KC registered? If she is you could try showing her or even pedigree whippet racing. She wouldn't be able to race properly until she was 12 months old but most clubs encourage pups and give the short runs to get them chasing the lure.

Some whippets take to jumping others don't. As I said Amber loves to jump she jumps baby gates in the house for fun yet her brother Simba has absolutely no interest and has never tried to jump. You will need a degree of obedience so start taking her to puppy classes as soon as you can. Find somewere now go and visit and if you like what you see then put your name down.

Explain to the trainer that your dog is a whippet if they try to tell you that whippets are not trainable then try somewere else whippets are very trainable you just have to perservere with them they can be stubborn

Some years ago when I first had whippets a localish man won the ABC agility at crufts with a whippet. As I said Amber loves to jump and has done fun agility at companion shows always on a lead though. She would do everything including all the dog walks and even had a go at the A frame. The only thing she couldn't do mainly because she has never been taught tto do it was the weave.

Re: Hi... any whippet owners??

Thanks guys for the info / suggestions, I'll look into them all. Yep, she's KC registered still got to transfer into my name... a job for the weekend.

I'll definately look into classes now and get a place booked, there are a couple nearby I can check out. We missed out on classes with our youngest beddie which I regret now so wont make that mistake again.
