Please don't throw sticks

for your dogs.

Because I have changed my hours at work I haven't seen the normal group of people walking dogs as I have been taking mine out earlier. Yesterday I went out later as it was quite warm and met a woman with a boxer who we often used to meet. She asked if I had heard about Rocko.

Rocko was a border collie we saw on odd occasions with his family. He was a well behaved dog who would lie down and wait until my hooligans had gone past. The only thing with Rocko was he had a thing about sticks he always carried one.

Apparently his owner was walking him one monday a week or so ago it was pouring with rain and no one else was about. I have no idea exactly what happened but there is a big grassy mound and Rocko had a stick but had picked it up end on and was on the mound.

What happened I have no idea but the stick went down Rocko's throat and came out on his throat. His owner was on her own no phone and no one else about. She had to carry Rocko and he wasn't a small collie. They took him straight to the vets who examined him and said the stick was all out and he would be ok.

That night Rocko kept bringing up blood and was rushed back to the vets. He had an xray and it was found a peice of stick had one down his throat and pierced his throat.

There was nothing they could do Rocko was PTS he was only a young dog

So please if you are reading this and your dog like Rocko like to carry sticks treat them to a new toy they can take on walks and carry even a rolled up newspaper would be safer than a stick.

R I P Rocko run free lad.

Re: Please don't throw sticks

That is so sad, poor Rocko RIP.

This also happened to a friend of a friends dog, he was running along with a stick in his mouth and stumbled, the stick pierced his throat and came right through the other side. Amazingly with surgery he survived but it was horrific for him and his owner.

I never throw sticks for my two, only tennis balls. But I see so many people throwing sticks for their dogs and it's so worrying. I know there are thousands of dogs who will chase and carry sticks all their lives and never have an accident, but why take that risk?

Re: Please don't throw sticks

So sad, a friend of mines dog had a very lucky escape with a stick down the throat. They used to throw them for her and this particular stick stcuck in the ground leaving an end sticking up and she hurtled into the sticking out bit (if that makes sense) Vet said it was only her size that had saved her (she was a big gsd cross)

please don't throw him sticks anymore, would hate to hear anything bad had happened to Taz and although you make sure he carries them properly it's also when he runs to pick them up as mentioned in the last post, if the stick lands poking up towards him and he lunges for it it could have the same disastrous effect.

I've also just bought a Safestix for my lot, they seem to like it so far, I bought the 50cm one and it's a good size for my lot.

Re: Please don't throw sticks

aww poor dog. my friends mum'ss springer had a stick incident alhough it was from runnong into a bush rather than him swallowing it. it pierced through his shoulder, vet thought it was out but a few days later he was still not well and it was very infected, turned out the stick had snapped and part of it was inside his shoulder. after a very expensive operation he is now ok but took a long time before he could romp like he used to. i am also wary of balls as my ex mil lad a lab that choked on a ball as she jumped up to catch it. x
