This happened to my last dog too. I'd heard you shouldn't throw sticks for dogs but stupidly thought it wouldn't happen to me...
Kerry was very lucky because the end of the stick rammed sideways into the inside of her cheek instead of down her throat. It was stuck fast and i had to pull it out...
She went into shock, with pale gums, shaking etc. We were in the middle of a field and i had to carry her home - collie labrador cross too, so quite a big dog. I was so upset at the time, i thought she was going to die.
She was given injections for the shock and the vet seriously considered an exploratory operation, as any splinters of stick remaining under the skin could migrate and cause serious problems.
In the end she decided on a cautious wait and see approach with frequent check ups and a week of antibiotics.
Bit of a long winded story but don't ever think it wont happen to you...
