Re: Please don't throw sticks

Oh god that is awful, poor Rocko. Prince loves sticks, he has to grab them when we are out walking but I take them straight off him, I should get him a safe stick to carry though

Re: Please don't throw sticks

i must admit when we first got max we threw sticks (he loved them) but when we were in the vets a dog came in after an accident with one. i told my OH to stop but he was like 'dont be cruel let him be a dog' etc. but then there was a thread on here like this one that i showed him . now he wont let max play with sticks you do feel guilty occasionally but a ball is just as fun

This happened to my last dog too. I'd heard you shouldn't throw sticks for dogs but stupidly thought it wouldn't happen to me...

Kerry was very lucky because the end of the stick rammed sideways into the inside of her cheek instead of down her throat. It was stuck fast and i had to pull it out...

She went into shock, with pale gums, shaking etc. We were in the middle of a field and i had to carry her home - collie labrador cross too, so quite a big dog. I was so upset at the time, i thought she was going to die.

She was given injections for the shock and the vet seriously considered an exploratory operation, as any splinters of stick remaining under the skin could migrate and cause serious problems.

In the end she decided on a cautious wait and see approach with frequent check ups and a week of antibiotics.

Bit of a long winded story but don't ever think it wont happen to you...

Re: Please don't throw sticks

It happened to my friend's dog and she had to have a lot of surgery to get over it. I won't let mine carry sticks nor will I let anyone throw them for my dogs. My friend's staffie loves sticks so I bought him a safe stick
Dogless likes this.
