Re: Resolving Rescue Crisis

Its just as bad over here, we aren't overwhelmed with Staffies, but there are a large number of mixed breed dogs, say GSD sized and they are harder to rehome This time of year is as bad as after Christmas because its holiday time and people wont pay for kennels- the poor dog gets dropped off before and they get a new puppy in September. This isn't just French, its Brits as well.
I foster, so I know how hard people in the refuges work, but if anything happened to me I couldn't put my own dogs there.

Maybe he`s become institutionalised in some ways, but he doesn`t deserve to die because he has behavioural issues, all of which in the right home and with the right owner can be kept under control, they won`t be cured but managed.
It breaks my heart not being able to have him,but i do as much as i can to give him, walking him on my days off, buying him treats and toys,it`s not ideal and maybe people think it`s cruel, but he`s healthy,he has his own big day run so he`s not in a regular kennel. In fact all our longtermers have bigger kennels.
I admire those that work in a "kill" shelter as i physically couldn`t work anywhere that killed healthy animals.
It`s hard enough working in a no kill shelter.
I hope you didn't take offence to my post - you sound as if you are doing all you possibly can to make this dogs life happier. Maybe some dogs do become institutionlised & can cope with their lot but I don't believe alot can or should.

It's finding the right home though, there may be homes out there who are willing & can mange dogs with behaviorual problems but not enough of them.

When I was looking for our second dog I was constantly looking at rescue website & was in tears most days looking at the amount of lovely dogs who were unwanted. I wish I could help more, maybe in a couple of years time we can get our third

Re: Resolving Rescue Crisis

no offence taken
I guess because i work in a no kill shelter,i can`t imagine putting animals to sleep needlessly.
I beleive theyb all deserve a chance and so long as we have staff here that can handle our more difficult dogs,i remain positive that they will find a home.
I would be heartbroken if we put one of our longtermers to sleep, then someone came in who would have been perfect for them.
I know 4 years seems like a very long time for a dog to be waiting for it`s perfect home, but he`s not unhomable, just needs a special home, but most people want a "perfect" dog, which unfortuanaltey most rescue dogs aren`t,through no fault of their own.

I agree; at what point do you decide that a long termer has had too long; different if a dog was completely stressed etc.

Some dogs live in far worse conditions than in an excellent rescue like where FB2001 works where the dogs are loved, cared for and given stimulation and worked with so they can be ever more ready for that loving home.

Re: Resolving Rescue Crisis

Thanks we do try, glen for instance there is nothing physically wrong with him,yes he was a little naughty when he came to us,but with training he`s has turned into an amazing little staffie, yet how long has he been with us?nearly 2 years!!!!!
I couldnt be the one to take him to end his life, purely because no-one wants him.

does he look unhappy?
