Other dog owners are ****ing me off! Sorry rant alert

Took my two sons and Sandy to play football up at a local field. Whilst there Sandy got repeatedly trampled on by a very large staff, this dog did not know how to play well at all and it had no recall. Later on a tractor came to mow the grass, everytime it came up our end of the field I got Sandy to sit and stay near me and held onto her collar just incase. The staffie owner let her dog run round and round the tractor and behind the huge lawnmower blades

Luckily they moved on in the end and we were playing football when a collie came along and totally attacked the ball, the owner didn't attempt to call her back and just let her get on with it until she popped it which really upset my kids!

I was so proud of Sandy and I know it sounds snobby but she behaved so well and responded really well to every command, no she is not perfect but I work around weak points and put her on a lead if necessary.

The two dogs were lovely but the owner of the collie said "good job your son didn't pick the ball up as she would have gone for him" I just responded "good job I had control of my children so this situation didn't happen"

omg!

it makes you wonder what the hell goes through peoples minds doesn't it! I know it's only a football but i'd have been SO angry with that collie owner, i'd have been tempted to ask them to reimburse me for a new football.... it's NOT his dogs toy - it was your sons!

and as for the SBT owner...... that poor dog is gonna have a very sticky end if they don't get control of it (or keep it on a lead) soon. Me & OH were on a beach with Tiger a few months back, there was a massive digger thing on the beach driving around. It was about half a mile away but I didn't let Tiger wander much further than lead length from us (he was off) and made sure I kept his toy in my hand so that he wouldn't run away.

I've had a dog hit by a car & killed (I was only 4 and it happened in front of me) and it has affected me for life. I would never, ever let any of my dogs off lead near a moving vehicle

I'm getting naffed off with other dog owners too, particularly small dog owners that thing my staff is going to eat their dog, so feel the need to pick the little darling up, whilst it sits their in their arms, growling and snapping away.

Re: Other dog owners are ****ing me off! Sorry rant alert

Some people are clueless.

My collie used to pop footballs but only his own. I would never let my collie play with another dog/persons ball. There is such a thing as manners.

The owner should have apologised to your children!!!

I have 2 small dogs and I look forward to mine meeting other dogs big and small. If I saw someone with a big dog on a lead then I would just call mine away or put my girls on their leads.

If the staffy was off lead, I would happily let me girls say hello and vice versa!!!

Some people dont know how to be responsible dog owners, and its the dogs that suffer in the end. ive come across many irresponsible dog owners who think that its ok for there unruley dog to just bounce up to mine and dont give a crap yet if my dogs were agressive it would be there fault as they are staffs, all you can do is keep your head up high and know you are doing well by your dog and making sure its undercontrol.

I know exactly how you feel I have it so often with dogs running up, trowing themselves at Maya and just being a nuisance to her and I have to remove her before she looses her patience. Earlier today we passed a small dog with the owner trying to pull it away as it had a look of I'm going to get you so Maya just walked past and took no notice, well I saw them again this time the dog was off lead so I made Maya sit as the owners put the dog on lead, we waited till the past us and I told Maya she could go, well the little dog went crazy barking and screaming to get at her. I could see the owners obvious embarrassment but atleast they put him on as we got to the park maya kept having dogs run up to her, one was a young staffy who was out with kids between 6-10 no adults with them and they had no control.

Blimey! You wouldn't let your kids run up to someone in the park, steal their toy and then break it so why is it acceptable for your dog to do the same, and then to admit that the dog could have bitten you! Grr! Why is it off its lead near people then!

I certainly don't get it right everytime but as I know Zac's weak areas I take every measure I can to try and manage all situations, and if I make a mistake I will always apologise profusely!

Re: Other dog owners are ****ing me off! Sorry rant alert

Whats depressing is that if it happens often enough it can change your dogs whole perspective on meeting strange dogs and undo months of puppy socialization.
Just the other day we met a JRT who threw himself at my lot, shoved Hannah, chased Heidi and humped Adam. The owner had no control and eventually I had to pick Adam up to stop him trying to shoo this annoying brat of a dog away from the girls! Its only a matter of time before it tries to hump the wrong dog and gets its neck broken..

I think some people just wander around in a little bubble and aren't meaningfully stupid or selfish but could do with putting themselves in others' shoes once in a while and think about consequences. Kilo would probably have loved to have had a go with your football and popped it; simple solution that I use - keep him away. Sorry to hear you had a stressful time .

I think that is the problem actually. People seem to think that as long as their dog is friendly, it doesn't matter if it approaches someone elses dog. And its that kind of attiude that stresses me out. I've had a few say to me "oh it's okay he/she needs to learn" when their dog has approached mine and he has snapped at it, but my dog also needs to learn - he needs to learn that it is not okay to snap at other dogs and at the moment I am having terrible trouble teaching him that, and it doesn't help when others force their dogs on to mine because they can't control them - or can't be bothered to control them!

I must admit I am far more complacent with Ruby and have no problem with her approaching dogs, but only if they're off lead or if the owner is signalling that they don't mind her approaching (like letting their on lead dog wander over). But if a dog was on a lead and owner didn't look like they want to interact then I wouldn't let her go near. And she's blind anyway so more often than not, the other dog has to approach her first.
