After spaying - dos and don'ts

Kenzie's booked in to be spayed next Wednesday and, while I know the vet will tell me, I was just wondering what I should and shouldn't do afterwards.

I know she'll be groggy and sore and not to give her too much food afterwards. And I know I'll have to keep her 'quiet' but does this mean she can't go on any walks until the stitches come out, or just for the first few days? Obviously I won't let her race around like an idiot with other dogs but can she go on a short on-lead walk after a few days?

Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks

Re: After spaying - dos and don'ts

If I remember correctly.
We kept Lilly at home for 48 hours after - she wasn't really keen to do much anyway. Then on lead walks only, just short walks until she went back for her check up.
Then it was supossed to be another 7 days of lead walks only - but building up to normal walks but Lilly was impossible to keep calm and we were off on our hols so she was off lead
She didn't bother with her stitches I had more problems stopping Zipper licking them.

I think both my girls were at home with just garden trips for the first couple of days. In fact I kept them in a pen so they wouldnt be bothered by the other animals or pull their stitches.
You have to try and stop them jumping up on the sofa too coz it can pull stitches, esp as smaller dogs have further to jump.

Re: After spaying - dos and don'ts

My Lilly was spayed in May.

When OH brought her home he made a lovely comfy bed for her. She was very groggy and only got up to wee and have a drink. Keep the water bowl near her, so she doesn't have to walk too far initially.

Dont let them jump up onto furniture and if they sleep upstairs, which mine do, carry them up the stairs.

We got special food from the vet for her.

Lilly didnt have to have the stitches out as they went on their own.

Keep an eye on the scar and make sure it doesnt get inflamed or infected.

We had to keep her on the lead when we went walking for a week at least but truthfully she didnt want to be energetic anyway, so we let her off after a few days and she just walked clamly next to us and just stopped to sniff.

I think thats about it!

Re: After spaying - dos and don'ts

when we got skye done she felt majorly groggy, but only til the next day. she didnt really want to do anything other than lie in a corner, a really annoying corner where we couldnt see her. so had to coax her into a room with us.

the big mistake we made was offered her a full bowl of water, she drank loads then immediately spewed it all back up and as she was wearing the lampshade collar, it went all over her. she was freaked out. so i would only offer small amounts of water when she first gets home. and she didnt eat anything, but i wouldnt worry about that til the morning.

then just short on lead walks for 2days, then gradually longer walked over the next 7days. she went mental not having her offlead time hehe.

she will be fine, dont worry.

oh and i never take the food from the vets, coz its ridiculously priced. i either give a wee bit of naturediet, or just make chicken and rice for the first couple days. back on normal diet after painkillers are finished really.
