Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

She's currently on Symply Puppy turkey and rice.

She's been getting on ok with it but she's really less then impress when I set it down. She only eats it if I soak it in warm water.

I was going to get fish4puppies but would prefer to buy food locally.

I heard that Fishmongers is a good copy cat and cheaper.

But they only do it in adults.

does it really matter...?

I mean if the kibble is to big then i'm just gunna get wainwrights salmon and potato.

anyone who has had fishmongers, is the kibble really big?

luna is 15 weeks old.

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

never used puppy food, it`s all a marketing gimmick and the only difference is the size of the biscuits in my opinion. they never used to have puppy food

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

Many moons ago there was no such thing as puppy food. However the claims are that puppy food gives them the extra protien/fats etc that they need to grow into healthy adult dogs. Although they've managed fine for eons before now.
Wainwrights salmon and potatoe is large kibble, if you're going to use P@H then the fishmonger would probably be the better one.

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

There is generally a higher protein content in puppy food which is needed to help them develop. Ruby was on puppy food until she was 5.5 months old. I bought one 15kg bag of skinners for £30 & a few individual kilos of other puppy kibble as she got sick of the skinners from time to time.

You cld try mixing it with gravy in with it, Ruby liked that a lot.

I tend to agree with Jules somewhat about the marketing ploy as the skinners puppy was double the price of the skinners I buy now for just 4% more protein.

At the end of the day, its your pup & I'm sure you know what to do best for her.

Just my opinion mind.

Or if its too large a kibble for a wee mouth, you can crush it down by putting some in a platic bag & rolling pin it down to size.

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

When we got Bella, the breeder gave us a big bag of puppy food and then when we registered her at the vets she got another big bag of puppy food free.

Once that was all gone, she went on the same food as Lilly.

I do like to give them a little wet food with their dry, they yum it down.

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

I would never buy puppy food again if I were to go back to commercial food (which I never intend to again either!!). It does seem to be a marketing ploy plus the higher protein content and its quality (due to the source - kibble) caused Kilo some issues that could have led to more serious problems in the future.

Many moons ago there was no such thing as dog food! I think it very much depends on the puppy, personally. Some puppies do not do well on puppy food as it contains too much protein, which can make them hyperactive and in a large breed can cause their joints to grow too fast.

I always put a bit of wet food in with mine, always have because I don't believe that dogs like dry food very much, not on its own anyway. With a small dog I would just feed the wet, but these two are just too big for that.

If you are going to change though, do it gradually. A little new with the old, then gradually increase it over a week or so.

Re: Do I HAVE to buy puppy food?

Thanks guys! I'm a bit scared since symply has given her nice hard stools but she just looks so bored with her food. hahaha. Takes her ages to eat it all.

Off to P@H!
