I'd Like to Take My Chihuahua For a Walk!

First of all

Secondly

Phoebe has a problem. Now it isn't something I'd necessarily spend sleepless nights thinking about but it does get me some comments.

Phoebe will not walk on a lead. The situation is slightly more complicated though, if I put the lead on her in the house she's absolutely fine running to her bed with it on (she has an unhealthy love for her bed, it's best we stay out of that!) She has been on the lead outside, I took her to a local park and she'd sniff and take a few steps every so often but apart from that nothing. Her main problem is that the second I walk infront and try to get her to come with me, she'll plonk her little bum down, pull her head back and just absolutely refuse to move!

I've tried almost everything but she's not that interested in treats, even lovely high-end ones from P@H and she doesn't care about encouragement. I could sit there all day covered in chicken calling her name in a pitch only dogs could hear and she'd still sit there.

Now I know Chihuahuas are notoriously hard to lead train but I would love to get up in the morning and take my dog for a walk

Re: I'd Like to Take My Chihuahua For a Walk!

Has she got a doggy friend that could come out with you. Thats what i did with Torrin he was awful so i took him out with Jazz who is brilliant for young dogs she doesnt react to anything then when Briggs was being stupid i took him with his best friend Torrin.I think it gives them confidence to see their friends enjoying the big outside world.
She loves her bed as she has decided thats a place of security thats why she will run with the lead on to it

We're planning on going out with my friend's JRT hopefully at the weekend, it's just finding time when we're both available really. Hopefully Phoebe will perk up a little bit and start to walk properly.

Oh she adores her bed, she won't be without it. I don't know whether it's cute of slightly odd

Re: I'd Like to Take My Chihuahua For a Walk!

We've got a similar problem with Izzy - she will not walk on the main road outside our house! If we take her outside she either plonks her bum down or pulls straight back to the house until she starts choking! We have to drive her to the park every time for a walk, and once in there she's brill, walks very nicely!

When visiting the ILs we take her out with Millie, their old Labrador and Izzy walks a lot better when with her, so maybe taking her out with another dog might help?

Phoebe won't even walk when she's in the park, she'll just sniff and walk one or two steps then stop. She's a stubborn little Chihuahua.

I'm going to take her out this weekend with my friend's dog so we'll see how that goes

Please excuse the ridiculous outfit they've decided to put on their dog, and obviously I would never pull Phoebe this hard but this is what Phoebe does when I try to go infront and walk her

She loves the outdoors, she's absolutely fine and relaxed until I try to get her to walk with me. She'll follow me around the house now too so I guess it isn't that she just doesn't want to come with me.

Re: I'd Like to Take My Chihuahua For a Walk!

All dogs naturally resist presure.
If i even gently pull on Zippers lead he will pull back/ resist with 10 times the force. Llly's not so stubborn and will follow me.
I'd make sure the lead is completly loose at all times and encourage her to follow you - if you can go to a safe place away from home and get her to walk with you without the lead once she is doing this put a very light lead on her making sure it's never pulled tight so she feels no pressure and do it again.
