Rawhide!

My dogs have rawhide, I am aware of the hazards and they are always watched when they are allowed it.
What is the alternative to rawhide? My pup is chewing like mad now (teething) and a large rawhide bone keeps her amused for hours, I'd be lost without them! I have tried Nylabone but it just doesn't cut the mustard (plus my older dog gets hold of them and chews them to bits!) Plus I was told sterilised real bones are no good as they splinter

Re: Rawhide!

Hi,
I sympathise
Mine was a right little chewer as a pup and hide was her mainstay. We have cats and she learned chewing released her frustrations, pent up emotions and chewed 7 bells out of her hide (with one eye on the cats )
My personal feeling is that if you take it away now, nothing else will suffice. I've not found anything like it.

Thankfully she only chewed small pieces from it and only used it a couple of times a day. When I realised the dangers, I knew it was unfair to take it away so tried to find a substitute.

Nothing has the same texture, lasts as long and with little food value. I gradually weaned her off at about 18 months. She uses a stagbar occasionally and an unfilled hoof but that's about it. Everything else I've tried is redundant, or gone in minutes and doesnt satisfy her need to chew

I havent tried any of the F4D chews and CSJ recommended their Ribbies - they may be a possibility for you?

Heidi is quite happy to have the odd chew and enjoys her dried tripe, chicken wing or similar as a treat but she's 2 now and out grown it I think.

Re: Rawhide!

Stagbars and raw bones are good, plus some of the bits you can get on Zooplus like ostrich tracheas and tendons.
Blondie likes this.

Re: Rawhide!

I've never given Kenzie rawhide but I give her Ziwipeak Hoof Chews. They're the only thing I've found that last hours of intensive chewing. Perhaps a little expensive but they work well for me!

Re: Rawhide!

Go to your butchers and ask for some lamb bones or something like that

Stag bars are supposedly quite good, never experienced them myself.

Re: Rawhide!

If you can stand the thought of what they actually are, what about Bully Sticks? I stopped giving Poppy rawhide a long time ago after reading about the possible dangers, she now has dried tripe sticks (which don't last very long) and the occasional Bully stick which keeps her quiet for a very long time but I do make her have those outside! She also has a stag bar which she loves and has had for months with plenty left for a few more months to come.

Re: Rawhide!

When we first got Piper she had rawhide, and one day decided to steal the raw bone of a friends dog, so we started getting her some of those from the farm shop. She now has a variety of chews (that does include rawhide) but we find the stag bars and raw bones last far longer than the rawhide.

Re: Rawhide!

How long would a stag bar last? £10.99 seems like very pricey if it only lasts for an hour or so
