pet passport microchip failure
we've had to put our dog into quarantine when travelling back from france today as the microchip could not be read. xrays show that the chip is still in her neck, but after visits to several vets & tried 6 different scanners, no joy so our only option really was quarantine.
the dog is fit & healthy (for a 13 year old staffy) & all other vacineations & treatments are up to date has anyone else had any experience of this? 2 questions really... 1. how long should it take to get her back? 2. obvioulsy this is going to be very expensive (it's cost us over £500 already). has any one made any sucessful claims against the chip manufacturer for liability for the failure? & how do we proceed with this. any help much appreciated thanks Jon & Maxine |

Re: pet passport microchip failure
What a nightmare for you, quarantine is 6 months, unless the chip can be scanned.
Did you have the chip read before you left the UK ? I know when mine went for their passports I found out my rescue girl had a chip but it didn't register when scanned by the rescue centre that she came from ![]() It might be worth trying to find out what make of scanner was used when the chip was registered so then you might be able to get your dog re-scanned and out of quarantine. |

Re: pet passport microchip failure
good news. chip was surgically reomoved & was read ok once it was out. elsa is now back with us after 4 days in quarantine. bad news. seems that the chip was faulty so no got to go though courts for liabilty as manufacturer is denying they have anyting to do with the problem

Re: pet passport microchip failure
lessons to be learnt... if you're are taking your dog abroad, best to make sure that the chip is functional before you go.
if it does not work do not travel. Elsa was in france for 4 months & chip worked fine last time (in feb). when we took her to vet just before travelling home, it could not be read. vet said that it would be ok -DO NOT BELEIVE THAT!. if chip does not read you have to find means of identifying your dog otherwise you have to make your own arrngements to quarantine the dog. if chip can be read once it's removed then defra will allow early realase.if not you could be looking at 6 months. not trying to be a scaremonger, but this is not an isolated case(so we have been told). make arrangements to sort this before you return. ports are very unhelpfull & will not do anything to help. you must do all this yourselves. anyway happy ending but be warned. cheers J&M |

Re: pet passport microchip failure
That's awful! My dog is chipped... bus she has two chips as the first one must have been faulty an after 6months she went for a routine vet appointment and the chip wouldn't scan! they wouldn't remove it, as its not doing any harm, and just fitted another one but i keep getting them to check it often! lol
