Re: Akita Pup

IMPO I would buy a halti and put it on him around the house.. treat him and get him used to it. When walking him outside attach your lead to the collar and leave the halti on his face not attached to anything until he is used to having it on... this desensitises him/her to it

Obviously you do not have to start doing this until he gets a bit older and bigger... but when you do decide to start using one this is how you start the introductions.
DO be sure that you also have a link from the halti to the collar in case the halti should slip off then you are still connected to the collar.

Whilst you are waiting for your new puppy... have a word with your vets and see if they do "puppy parties" if they do not, call around and find someone who does. These are especially useful!
Also start researching your local training classes. Ideally find one that hopefully does puppy classes and allow puppies on and off lead. This is very important for an Akita puppy to learn to interact with other puppies when very young so as wehn they get older there is not such a fear of other dogs etc. Make sure you are really committed to obedience classes for you and your puppy. the first 12 months are crucial and that puppy needs to come in contact with so many things to ensure it is a bombproof adult
Well that will keep you busy til your pup arrives. Attend the classes you find btw and see what the response is when you say I am getting an Akita. If they respond that Akitas are untrainable. Find someone far more intelligent trainer than they are
You will know when you have found the right class... you will feel relaxed and you will be able to picture you and your puppy there

Re: Akita Pup

Are you getting a Japanese Akita or an american one? If you're getting a Japanese Akita you could maybe look for a Japanese name. Our Siberian Husky is called Renji, it means Second Son or Second Love, and we got second choice from the litter of pups so it's quite apt. =)
