Re: Akita Pup

The pup is gorgeous and has "The No.1 Akita of all time" in its pedigree "Ch./Nor. Ch. Redwitch Dancin' In The Dark", the only thing that concerns me is that Mum and Dad have not been hip scored, and as hip Dyspacia is a problem that can be in the breed i dont think i am so keen to take this pup now, as gorgeous as he is. Can anybody else help, any thoughts??

Gill

Re: Akita Pup

Hi
I must admit I would only by a dog thats parents had been hip scored but that is mho. Even if the parents hip scores are a little over the average you can make an informed decision. I can see why you are a little worried most ethical breeders would have there dogs scored I think most breeds have hip displacia problem therefore most should have hip scores done ( obviously there must be the odd exception of breeds) I think you must go with what you are happy to do. If you are buying a pup and are considering breeding then I would not buy the pup due to its parents not being hip scored. You could be lucky and the pup will be fine but these scores are there for a good reason. I must admit with that cute little face the decision will be a tricky one. Let us know what you decide

Re: Akita Pup

dont know a great deal about Akita's but i believe the parents should not only be hip scored but tested for elbow dysplasia & inherited eye conditions, i think you are very wise not to rush in and buy the little puppy

Are their ears floppy when they are pups but stand up when they grow up??

Are they slobbery dogs??

cheers guys,

I have bred akitas for 9 years.. impo...
Hip scores and eye testing should be of paramount importance.
they are not slobbery dogs.. albiet they can drag a quarter of a dog bowl along with them for 5 mins
An Akita puppy that has "biggish" ears will take longer to stand up. My Akita puppies ears are usually up by 5-6 weeks. sometimes they do take a bit longer but should be up by 8 weeks.. but again exceptions can be made. Some Akitas have "thick" ears and not "big" ears and sometimes they do take a bit more time to stand up.

Always meet the parents make sure the puppy is raised indoors and well socialised. This is a very big breed and early socialisation is crucial.
My Akitas are soppy.. even with puppies they are not adverse to strangers having a look.
I do not agree with pees who say that thier Akitas cannot go near strangers cause its in their nature. That sends BIG RED lights to me.
They should be loving and socialiable with the family and with strangers some can be a bit offish but once I say its ok.. then introductions should always be fine
They are a natural gurad dog hence why they need the owner always to be the top dog.. they need direction! They CANNOT ever be let off a lead..
oh god... there is so much more to say. if you want further information please get in touch.. I have alot of information on my website if you want pm me

Japanese name? may I ask why? The Akita you have pictured is not a Japanee Akita it is an american type. If you are looking at a Japanese Akita it is a totally separate breed from the black faced "American" Akita
To further expand on this... two Akitas exist
1) the Akita Inu (Pure Japanese Type)
2) Akita (also known as the American Akita, or American Type)
3) Tweeny ( a combination of the two.. producing awful type and when grown up does not really resemble a "true" akita

I have seen the parents pics.. they do not impo resemble nice type
sorry :-(
Sorry to confuse you some more???

Re: Akita Pup

Hi
It sounds like tigerkatz knows exactly what she is talking about and this is definitely the type of breeder you should be talking to if you are looking at getting an Akita pup. Not being an a*** li** but it is a important decision and the more info you can get about the breed and if I am correct I am sure someone will tell me if I am not, You really need to know what you are doing with this breed.
