Standard poodle

Thinking about getting a standard poodle puppy as I have allergies to some dogs. I have always loved this breed and hear they do well with other pets and being so intelligent are easy to train.
Any one out there with one some advice would be great.
Thanks.

Re: Standard poodle

No direct experience of them, but I don't think any dog is easy to train, just that some are more biddable than others, and that's down to breeding. As there are very few working lines of standard poodles, you'll struggle to find one that's proven to have this type of character. They are a stunning dog, and I hope someone comes along with a bit more direct experience, but any I've known second hand have not been as easy to train as my two Labs. Good luck with your research

Re: Standard poodle

When I saw your thread title I just thought yes please

I love poodles

Find yourself a great breeder, possibly from shows you can visit
Standard poodles require, hip scoring (done once in their lifetime ), eye testing (once a year). And recommended by the breed club (a great resource)sebaceous adenitis testing

Re: Standard poodle

I have miniatures now but have had standards. They are lovely family dogs, keen to learn and keen to please and have fantastic temperaments. They can be a bit self willed at times and one of mine was an obsessive hunter and would clear off without warning at the merest whiff of rabbit.
They do vary in size quite a lot so make up your mind what you are wanting. There are also some atrocious breeders about who can sound very convincing over the phone so visit before deciding.

Re: Standard poodle

I know you said your interested in Poodles. However can I also recommend Bedlington Terriers, I have two and they are a fantastic breed. Just if you maybe wanted another choice option.. I can't recommend then highly enough, I know Beau's mum and mstori, who had a poodle x bedlington, would agree with me

EDT: Forgot to mention that Bedlingtons are like Poodles, great for allergy sufferers.

Re: Standard poodle

I can't not mention them, they are such a fantastic breed, I couldn't recommend them highly enough to anyone.. They are just such little characters and well their appearance can be a little overwhelming, you can have them look normal. Suki always looks like a right scruff where as Bailey always has a regal appearance about him. I've never been a fan of terrier dogs but now I've changed my mind. Wouldn't change them for the world

Re: Standard poodle

I met this gorgeous Standard puppy today ( 7 months old) a black one called Ruby she was lovely wanted to take her home. She was 19" so at the smaller end of the scale.

Don't know if still available but Many Tears rescue had two white 7 month old standards looking for homes as their disabled owner couldn't look after them anymore.
