Is this normal for rescue centres?

Been toying of the idea of another dog and saw an ad in my local paper for rescues. Called them and they said that as my children are under 7 I cannot rescue any of their dogs. Is this true of all shelters? I've got no problem waiting 5 years as it was only a thought.

It seems to be the case that more and more of them are adopting these rules along with a 6 foot fence surrounding your garden, no laminate flooring etc etc. However, there doesn't appear to be any consistency across the board.

Some are just no puppies to families with children under 5.

Re: Is this normal for rescue centres?

I have been searching rescue centres for over a year and was told that with young children, it would be pretty much impossible to rescue a dog unless they were 100% certain that the dog came from a family with young children or a puppy came in but puppies get re-homed quickly. A lot of rescues actually advised me to go to a breeder for a puppy! I understand the reasoning, as it just isn't safe because the dog is unsure of children (and of course everything is new having been rescued) and the children may not be dog savvy, which is why they might prefer older children who are calmer and more sensible around animals.

However, I found a rescue centre that had puppies and I now own one, along with my two young children! (Not recommended) This place also foster many dogs so are able to give a better idea of how each dog will react to small animals, children and other dogs. I'm not entirely sure I can put the name on here as I don't want to be seen to advertise?

Re: Is this normal for rescue centres?

It's true at the rescue I volunteer at because most of the dogs are unclaimed strays with no history we feel it's more prudent to rehome where there are older children .

I have never met a family when taking an enquiry who hasn't said there kids are good around dogs or they know how to manage them when I wouldn't take those risks! Or let kids play with the dogs like that.

Sadly many rescueshave rules out of bad experiences . There are many rescueson the other hand who haveknown histories on thedogs or thedog is in a foster home with kids which I always recommend

Re: Is this normal for rescue centres?

not all rescues have a blanket policy like that.

at the one i work at, all the dogs have recommendations of ages of children they would suit to be around. so there is usually a dog that will suit!

Re: Is this normal for rescue centres?

Not at all.

We've just rehomed a beautiful rottie to a family who have a 3 year old.
