idea for safe house/tag collar

i know a lot of people dont like keeping collars on (im one of them, my guys very rarely wear them!) due to the risk of them getting caught and choking the dog or hurting its neck

I've ordered some bits and pieces and im going to be making collars and harnesses (once i get back into it, havent been on a sewing machine for a few years!), and I've come up with a great idea (or at least i think so )

I can get hold of elasticated webbing, so if i make house collars to order, they will sit loose around the neck, and you could adjust it to get the perfect fit, so it wouldnt be tight. But if the dog did happen to get caught on something, when it pulled, the collar would stretch and the dog could back out of it

Does this seem like a good idea? can anyone see any issue with this? Obviously it would be a house/tag collar only and not to be used for walking etc

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

Sounds like some of the cat collars, it could be a good idea. I have actually seen Daycare collars when I was in the states and have been told how well they work by a few of the customers who came in.

I'll have to get the names later when hubby comes online but it'd be a great idea especially for dogs like sibes that can't be trusted not to run off/escape from the house.

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

I think it's a great idea too and would probably use one. The one suggestion I would have is make sure you can use them with those tags that don't dangle down but slip on the collar instead. My dad's dog Ella was lying on the deck wearing her collar once and the tag slipped through the slats and turned and when Ella went to get up she couldn't because the tag was stuck below the deck. Luckily my dad was around but she never wore a collar unless on walks after that. Kenzie only wears her collar in the house if I am with her.

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

I love that idea. My gsd wears a massive collar I can hold it if I need to as on walks he rarely goes on a lead, if he gets stuck he can slip his head out but my pug cross terrier has got a skinny neck and a fat head! So his collar is loose but he can't get his head out if he were to get stuck. Went to a puppy training class last night where we were told about Id tags and the law etc so would rather have a collar on all the time incase one made a bid for freedom! We'll see you on dragons den!

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

just to point out there is some controversy about the elasticated cat collars as most/many animals if caught by the neck panic and pull forwards in an attempt to flee and not backwards so I would say an elasticated collar is safer rather than safe

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

As indysmamma said, be sure to word it carefully so people know the extent of the safety- I think it is certainly much safer, but another thing is I have heard a few cases where the dog has twisted in place- and strangled itself not by hanging but by tightening of the collar with each twist- your idea I imagine would minimise this, but not exclude it- so be sure to cover yourself with your wording. My two are panic-twisters, so I will always be wary of house collars.

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

thanks guys, yea i dont expect them to be fail proof, more just safer than a flat collar or a check chain (which for some reason loads of people seem to use for tag collars!)

I will make some and then post pics, will be avaliable to buy as long as I can do them properly!

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

Here's one of the collars

KeepSafe Product Description - Premier Pet

and a second one, that uses velcro and comes off even when twisting.

Go down to PlaySafe™ Daycare Safety Collar.

Re: idea for safe house/tag collar

out of interest, would it be possible to put a 'snap point' in a collar that snaps under a twist motion/powerful jerk motion?

obviously no good for true restraint just for bearing id
