Teething problems

So far it's been ok between mooky and bella.

Sunday evening they just ignored one another.
Monday still ignored each other on the whole but followed each other about.
Tuesday lots of sniffing one another and following each other everywhere.

However last night at training he got a bit rough with her-first play together and was growling alot and she got hackly but kept running back in for more so obv wasn't scared!

He's also got SA more than I initially thought! This morning he has jumped a stair gate to get to me whilst I went to the loo!! He whines alot when u walk out the room which is unsettling bell who's never had a problem being left

If I had the time I would focus solidly on leaving and returning building up the time he's left. I can't crate him as I don't know how much experience he's had with crating and I'm worried sticking him in a crate may only add to the problem? If I could leave them with a kong then that'd be another option but we've had growls over chews-never over food or treats.

I'm just having a wobbly day I think I know it's only day 3 so we are going to have teething troubles but I'm desp for any advice/support/hugs xx

Re: Teething problems

I take it Bella is crate trained ? Do you have access to a second crate ? If so put the two crates alongside one another and give them a kong each in their respective crates but stay in the room so you can observe and slowly build up the time for crate training, do you have a dap diffuser ?

When my dog was teething I used to put a wet cloth in the freezer and let him chew on it once it was frozen. The cold helped numb the pain and he enjoyed chewing on it.

Not that sort of teething problems unfortunately, Sarybeagle has rehomed a rescued beagle and this is the introduction of her dog to the rescue that is causing small problems along the way

Re: Teething problems

Bell is 100% crate trained but haven't used it for 6 months or so. She has access to it constantly and often find her in there. I'm going to order one for him and place them nearby and over the weekend build it up.

He really only whines for 2/3 mins and soon gives up and goes to sleep but those few mins make bella pace and 'look' unsettled.

I've said all along bell comes first. She's my main priority and I feel sick (literally) thinking I've ballsed up her routine and happiness

What's really bugging me is the fact he's had 5 homes and I keep looking at him thinking why?? Is there something about him I've not yet seen.

lexie2010 will become famous soon enough
Re: Teething problems

ah chin up it will all be fine.
dont look for a problem with mooky, the problem was obviously with his list of previous owners, you know how some people get a dog thinking its all cuddles and walks in the sunshine when the reality of owning any dog regardless of breed, age, sex can be very different and its a long road that many people want a short cut for.
bella is just sooo used to being the only dog that anything would be different-im sure if you got another cat or person she would be the same-dogs like routine and she and mooky (and you and the family) will soon have a new routine all ironed out. i am so worried about how lexie will react when baby comes but yesterday she was lying on my legs with her head on my bump and it just melted my heart and i knew that all will be ok-it might take time and effort but it will be ok.
i would try a crate as someone else said and lay them side by side-perhaps you could borrow one from someone in your training class or from the vet incase it doesnt work out then at least you are not out of pocket.
but dont fret, we all have bad days and wonder what to do for the best but you ARE already doing what it for the best so make yourself a coffee and a biccie and settle down for a quiet 20mins with your beautiful beagles
(fingers crossed they are fast asleep like lexie currently is )

Re: Teething problems

I think it's early days and if you're like me you'll worry over every little thing because you want to get it right and have super happy dogs

If the whining is only a few minutes then I wouldn't worry about it. It's more likely Bella will calm Mooky down with her presence as they become more bonded.

For now just practice going out of the room for a few mins and come back - pay the dogs no notice. Although Mooky will whinge, the more repetition of you coming back into the room will reinforce the idea that you DO come back.

Mooky is a gorgeous Beagle and it's a shame he's been rehomed so many times, but I'm sure he'll settle down nicely with Bella. Look - You've raised 1 good Beagle, you can do it!!!!
